Tool Use And The Effect Of Action On The Imagination, D. Schwartz, Doug Holton
Tool Use And The Effect Of Action On The Imagination, D. Schwartz, Doug Holton
Douglas L Holton
Three studies examined the claim that hand movements can facilitate imagery for object rotations but that this facilitation depends on people's model of the situation. In Experiment 1, physically turning a block without vision reduced mental rotation times compared with imagining the same rotation without bodily movement. In Experiment 2, pulling a string from a spool facilitated participants' mental rotation of an object sitting on the spool. In Experiment 3, depending on participants' model of the spool, the exact same pulling movement facilitated or interfered with the exact same imagery transformation. Results of Experiments 2 and 3 indicate that the …

Designing To Learn About Complex Systems, Cindy Hmelo, Doug Holton, Janet Kolodner
Designing To Learn About Complex Systems, Cindy Hmelo, Doug Holton, Janet Kolodner
Douglas L Holton
Complex systems are commonly found in natural and physical science. Understanding such systems is often difficult because they may be viewed from multiple perspectives and their analysis may conflict with or extend beyond the range of everyday experience. There are many complex structural, behavioral, and functional relations to understand as well. Design activities, which allow explorations of how systems work, can be an excellent way to help children acquire a deeper, more systemic understanding of such complex domains. We report on a design experiment in which 6th grade children learned about the human respiratory system by designing artificial lungs and …

Eric Schwitzgebel presents an attractive argument for the use of affective indicators to both assess and extend the ''theory theory'' research agenda. A key component of his argument is an account of explanation that can be applied to both children and adults, few of whom possess the attributes and behaviors that warrant being called scientists. The core features of his account include 1) regarding a set of propositions as a theory and 2) subscribing to a theory by accepting and employing this set of propositions to explain events within the theory''s domain. We will argue that this account, while potentially …

Meeting Qm Standards Through Modular Design, Paula Jones
Meeting Qm Standards Through Modular Design, Paula Jones

The Quality Matters (QM) standards are benchmarks that educators strive to follow as they develop online courses. The QM standards are based on current literature focused on course delivery rather than course design. One method of course design that educators can use to provide organized, sequential and navigational web-supported instruction is through the use of modular instruction (use of modules). What is unique about the modular structure shared in this session is the use of an "Introductory Module" as a starting point in the course, plus the structure of the "Content Modules" that include links to communication boards that support …

In 2002, James Klein published a study based on a content analysis of research articles in PIQ from 1997 through 2000. That study was aimed at determining how much empirical research was being reported in HPT and what the focus of that research was. Klein found that only about one third of the articles published in PIQ represented empirical research. The current study replicates Klein's research for the years of 2001 through 2005. Results indicate that there has been a significant increase in empirical research published in PIQ in the last five years with empirical research now accounting for more …

In their creation of online courses, instructional designers may inadvertently overlook the needs of learners with disabilities. However, creating accessible online courses isn’t merely a "nice to do" activity; it is required by federal law. Section 504 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act of 1973, for example, specifically prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities by any federal agency receiving federal funds; this includes colleges and universities.
Digital And Media Literacy: Tapping Into Popular Culture, Renee Hobbs
Digital And Media Literacy: Tapping Into Popular Culture, Renee Hobbs
Renee Hobbs
It’s something every principal understands: when teachers have low expectations of their students, they may rely on lecturing, explanation and recitation, over-controlling classroom interaction, and summarizing texts on behalf of students. But when teachers develop and implement curriculum ideas that are predicated on students as active, engaged, and independent learners, great things can happen in the classroom. Teachers who are already using news media, popular culture, and digital media to support academic achievement in language arts, science, history, and the arts are discovering the power of connecting students’ digital learning skills to fundamental practices in analysis, evaluation, composition, reflection, and …
