Self-Regulation Or Self-Direction? An Investigation Of Learner Personality, Jeral Kirwan, Becky Smeltzer, Jeffrey Beard, Andi Damewood

This paper examines self-regulated learning (SRL) as a personality trait; that is, as a relatively enduring, trans-situational, dispositional attribute of individual learners. We first review our rationale for doing so, then present of empirical findings that illuminate the nomological network and construct validity of SRL.

In a previous study, we presented a citation analysis of the International Journal of Self-Directed Learning. In this follow-up study, we focus specifically on citations that have been published since 2003. Our purpose is to identify major trends relative to emerging scholars and publications.

This citation analysis examined the IJSDL to determine which publications and authors have influenced the thinking of contributors to this relatively new periodical. Data analysis and queries were based on previous studies but were expanded on identified trends found in the study. Findings include most frequently cited authors, publications, and other trends like major works and their date and magnitude of citations. Implications of the findings are addressed and charts and tables to further illustrate the findings are also included. Tenets Of Community Leadership, Becky Smeltzer, Mary Ziegler, Jeral Kirwan

Local community leaders know what is needed in their communities. Interest in multilateral leadership is growing as communities aspire to more local control. This type of leadership employs structures and tools that benefit the collective good. This chapter presents five tenets of leadership that exemplify that focus on local control: transformation, communication, collaboration, planning, and integrity. A case study illustrates how these tenets have been applied in a real-world setting. These tenets are the foundation for a vision of leadership centered in the local community.
