Reflective Essay On Assessment, Kerwin A. Livingstone Sep 2019

Reflective Essay On Assessment, Kerwin A. Livingstone

Kerwin A. Livingstone

The goal of education is learning, and the vehicle used to accomplish this goal is teaching. In the learning-teaching process, the fundamental component which determines the degree of learner outcomes’ achievement is assessment. Assessment has the express objective of determining whether or not learners have learned what they are supposed to learn. This reflective essay on assessment looks at assessment and what it is, what assessment should not be, how to constructively align assessment to learning outcomes, and valid assessment practices, among others. It is based on my personal experiences in the learning-teaching arena, from the secondary institution system to …

Raising The Bar For Instructional Outcomes: Toward Transformative Learning Experiences, Brent Wilson, Patrick Parrish

Brent Wilson

Most instructional technologists understand that instruction aims to be effective, efficient, and appealing. These three quality indicators have proven useful in establishing desired outcomes. In this article the authors suggest an expanded set of indicators, with more attention to social impact, engagement, and the learner's experience. By broadening and deepening expectations, the authors hope to encourage more research on instruction, leading to powerful or transformative learning.

Struggling Reader To Struggling Reader: High School Students' Responses To A Cross-Age Tutoring Program, Patricia Paterson, Lori Elliott Feb 2016

Struggling Reader To Struggling Reader: High School Students' Responses To A Cross-Age Tutoring Program, Patricia Paterson, Lori Elliott

Lori Elliott

This qualitative study examines the perceptions and responses of struggling ninth-grade readers who are teaching reading to struggling second- and third-grade students in a cross-age tutoring program. The program was designed to overcome the entrenched, negative affective barriers that older students often bring to the required reading class by placing them in a leadership role. It also intended simultaneously to improve their vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.

Results indicate that the older students developed strong mirroring relationships with their younger counterparts based on shared community strengths and norms, shifted their perspective to see themselves as increasingly competent role models, and applied …

From The Inside In: An Examination Of Common Core Knowledge & Communication In Schools, Jonathan Supovitz, Ryan Fink, Bobbi Newman

Bobbi Newman

In this report, CPRE researchers explore how Common Core knowledge and influence are distributed inside of schools and how these configurations may help teachers to engage with the Common Core and influence their understanding and implementation. To do so, we used a mixed-method approach to examine knowledge and influence in eight schools, including five elementary schools and three middle schools. Our central method was a survey of knowledge and influence of all faculty members in a sample of eight schools. These data are supplemented with interview data from a purposeful sample of teachers and administrators in the eight schools.

The Milwaukee Public School district (MPS) Demonstration Schools Initiative provided intensive support to 10 MPS elementary and middle schools implementing the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in mathematics and English language arts. This evaluation report was designed to answer two overarching questions: How did MPS implement the Demonstration Schools Initiative in Year One, and what factors shaped the implementation? Is there evidence of teachers' adoption of the instructional shifts associated with the CCSS? This evaluation found that teachers in the Demonstration Schools ended the 2012-2013 school year with significantly higher CCSS knowledge in both mathematics and English language arts than …

This evaluation report summarizes the evidence of the implementation and early impacts of the General Electric Foundation’s (GEF) Demonstration Schools Initiative in the Erie Public School district (EPS) conducted by the Consortium for Policy Research in Education (CPRE) during the 2012-2013 school year. The Demonstration Schools Initiative provided intensive support to four schools (two elementary, one middle, and one high) implementing the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in mathematics and English language arts. Concurrently during the 2012- 2013 school year, EPS also continued their implementation of another GEF-supported initiative— the Coaching Initiative—using a cadre of instructional coaches in mathematics, science, …

Contemplative Practices In The Classroom: A Cross-Discipline Discussion, Mark Brenner, Margaret Lowe, Michelle Mamberg, David O'Malley Dec 2015

Contemplative Practices In The Classroom: A Cross-Discipline Discussion, Mark Brenner, Margaret Lowe, Michelle Mamberg, David O'Malley

Margaret Lowe

Introducing contemplative practices, such as meditation, reflective listening, or directed silence, into the classroom can provide students with methods for the development of awareness, attentiveness and mindfulness. Higher education is traditionally grounded in a detached approach to learning, done in the service of fostering critical thinking. While objective analysis is a vital skill, such an approach may leave out the students’ lived experience. Incorporating contemplative practices fosters a student’s development of self- knowledge, compassion and the ability to embody theory in practice.

This roundtable discussion will provide attendees with an introduction to contemplative practices and their use in higher education; …

Plenary 4: Engaged Student Learning Across Disciplines: Reflection Within And Beyond The Classroom, Michelle Mamberg, Margaret Lowe, David O'Malley, Laura Mcalinden

Margaret Lowe

Contemplative pedagogy introduces a range of methods into our courses which aim to explore various mindfulness-based practices which have been shown to improve engaged student learning. By incorporating reflection on one's own immediate experience, faculty and students can better explore such analytic categories as objectivity, bias, point-of-view, acquired knowledge, and argumentation. In addition, supporting BSU's social justice initiative, recent research has demonstrated that training in reflective practices fosters development of self-knowledge, compassion (for oneself, others and the planet), and community-building. Based on the enthusiastic response to our 2010 roundtable, we plan to provide attendees further examples of such pedagogical techniques. …

Advocating For Mother Earth In The Undergraduate Classroom: Uniting Twenty-First Century Technologies, Local Resources, Art, And Activism To Explore Our Place In Nature, Christina Triezenberg, Ilse Schweitzer Vandonkelaar

Christina Triezenberg

Despite the growing evidence of humanity’s impact on the natural world and the urgent need to shape citizens who understand the impact that their choices and actions have on their local and global environments, colleges and universities throughout the United States have been slow to add environmental education as a core component of their undergraduate curricula. Harnessing our shared interest in environment issues and the humanities, we designed and taught an experimental course in environmental literature for the honors program at Western Michigan University that we hope will become a template of what is possible in postsecondary environmental education. Using …

Interprofessional Education, Lisa Bliss, Sylvia Caley, Patty Roberts, Emily Suski, Robert Pettignano

As legal educators consider how to improve the outcomes of legal education, maximizing the knowledge, skills, and values taught during the law school experience, consideration should be given to increasing interprofessional learning opportunities in the curricula. As Best Practices for Legal Education suggested, the creative thinking necessary for effective problem-solving includes an understanding of interprofessional dimensions of practice, but interprofessional opportunities are still the exception rather than the norm in legal education. Interprofessional legal education intentionally asks law students to blend the knowledge, skills, and values of two or more professions in order to address complex legal problems. Placing students …

Student Engagement And Learning-By-Doing: A Multiple Technique Approach To Teaching Global Business Strategy, Ingrid Bonn Mar 2015

Student Engagement And Learning-By-Doing: A Multiple Technique Approach To Teaching Global Business Strategy, Ingrid Bonn

Ingrid Bonn

Global Business Strategy is a complex and multifaceted subject which is challenging to teach to undergraduate students because of their lack of real-world work experience and the requirement to adopt an international perspective in all thought processes and activities. The purpose of this article is to present a semester-long teaching approach that is based on the assumption that global strategy content and behavioural skills must be simultaneously addressed when teaching the subject. This teaching approach, which fosters student engagement when dealing with diverse, complex and competing demands of global strategy development and implementation, has been used and refined over a …

Session A-2: Encountering Ourselves: American Indians And The Age Of Revolution, Claiborne Skinner Feb 2015

Session A-2: Encountering Ourselves: American Indians And The Age Of Revolution, Claiborne Skinner

Claiborne A. Skinner Jr.

This session will explore how Europeans who encountered the indigenous peoples of North America came to see them as a window into their own past. This provided philosophers and political theorists with a means by which to critique Baroque civilization. The result was Locke's "Natural Law," and Rousseau's Noble Savage." The notion that the world had moved away from freedom and liberty by becoming civilized became a potent argument for both the American and French Revolutions.
