This qualitative follow up sought the impressions of students after a two year program. The analysis of this data involved grounded theory qualitative methods. The primary means of data collection for the qualitative portion of this study was through digitally-recording and transcribing of participants’ voices in response to individual interview prompts. Seven themes emerged from the first interviews which included 1). Perceptions of leadership, 2). Changing perceptions the Jesuit ideas Magis/cura personalis, 3). Journal of Catholic Education
The COVID-19 pandemic and resulting quarantines around the globe have required social justice educators to respond to the unprecedented challenges and the needs of the communities they serve more than ever before. This article explores how educators in a Catholic University conducted community-based justice work in response to the challenges of the pandemic by integrating educators’ solidarity with faith and social justice commitments. We introduce the Lift as You Climb (Lift) project as one example of our approach with Catholic value of promoting human rights and common good. We offer reflections on challenges and successes of community-based programming, considerations of …
A Teacher’S Reflection On Catholic Social Teachings And Hopeful Curriculum During Covid-19, Kierstin Giunco
A Teacher’S Reflection On Catholic Social Teachings And Hopeful Curriculum During Covid-19, Kierstin Giunco
COVID-19 and Catholic Schools
This reflection details the online adaptation of a robust advocacy unit that was grounded in Catholic Social Teachings. As this unit asked students to unravel single narratives and persuade others to take action, there was a seamless link between the original design and a “hopeful curriculum,” which is supportive during a time of crisis as the goal is social-justice through solidarity and active participation (Renner, 2009) Through intentionally redesigning the unit guided by student curiosity, the classroom was simultaneously engaged with faith and social justice. Students became active advocates, especially through the intertwined nature of their topics and current events. …

“New times demand new methods”, William Joseph Chaminade. These words reflect the lived experiences of two faculty women of color, identified as Afro Caribbean and African American scholar practitioners in education at a Marianist university. We share our different narratives of the experience from the dual lens of social emotional learning and culturally responsive pedagogy with our classes and students as they thrived during a pandemic. Included in these narratives will be a discussion of the continued community building process, exploration of efforts to learn more about the teaching profession, social justice and advocacy as we learn about others, and …

Introduction To The Special Issue: The Challenges And Opportunities Of Including The Lgbtq Community In Catholic Education, Karen Huchting, Emily Fisher
Introduction To The Special Issue: The Challenges And Opportunities Of Including The Lgbtq Community In Catholic Education, Karen Huchting, Emily Fisher
Journal of Catholic Education
This special issue is dedicated to disseminating recent research about the opportunities and challenges of including the LGBTQ community in Catholic education. The relationship between Catholic educational institutions and people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) can be complicated. As Catholic organizations, Catholic schools are governed by the rules of the church, and as educational institutions, Catholic schools must be responsive to the needs of students, families, and communities, as well as to changes in the larger sociopolitical landscape. LGBTQ people, whether students, parents, teachers, or administrators, exist in Catholic educational institutions, yet there has been a …
Toward A Unified Computer Learning Theory: Critical Techno Constructivism, Bryan Philip Sanders
Toward A Unified Computer Learning Theory: Critical Techno Constructivism, Bryan Philip Sanders
LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations
Why did we ever purchase computers and place them along the wall or in the corner of a classroom? Why did we ever ask students to work individually at a computer? Why did we ever dictate that students should play computer games or answer questions built from a narrow data set? And why are we still doing this with computers in classrooms today?
This approach has contributed to a systemic problem of low student engagement in course materials and little inclusion of student voice, particularly for traditionally underrepresented students. New transformational tools and pedagogies are needed to nurture students in …

The Absence Of Aspiration In The Era Of Accountability, Mary R. Martinez
The Absence Of Aspiration In The Era Of Accountability, Mary R. Martinez
LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations
Reforms early in the 21st century purported to close the achievement gap between White students and students of color, to provide accountability and transparency to taxpayers, to implement meaningful consequences for low-performing schools, and to create the workforce for the century. In this study, I investigated the effects of school reform on the lived experiences of students who graduated from high school in 2014 by inquiring into six young people’s perceptions of their schooling. I sought to better understand whether participants were aware of the existence and intent of school reforms, and how or whether their aspirations for their futures …
Brotherhood, Social Justice, And Persistent Deficit Ideologies: Latino Students’ Experiences In An All-Male Catholic High School, Ursula S. Aldana
Brotherhood, Social Justice, And Persistent Deficit Ideologies: Latino Students’ Experiences In An All-Male Catholic High School, Ursula S. Aldana
Journal of Catholic Education
Declining Catholic school enrollment rates coupled with increasing numbers of Latino Catholics (in the US) have prompted Catholic leaders to interrogate how they can best engage and meet the needs of the Latino community (Ospino, 2014; Notre Dame Task Force, 2009). Much of this work focuses on how Catholic schools can attract Latino students and their families, but does not situate the Latino Catholic school student experience within the historical, economic and sociopolitical context. This paper interrogates the history and experiences of Latino students at Divinity High School (pseudonym), an all male Catholic high school that has historically served a …
Silencing The Critics: A Conceptual Framework In Teacher Preparation For Social Justice, Allison P. Schildts
Silencing The Critics: A Conceptual Framework In Teacher Preparation For Social Justice, Allison P. Schildts
LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations
Teacher preparation programs are making concerted efforts to prepare practitioners to transform urban education. Current studies rely heavily on self-reported data with little to no inclusion of the voices of teachers or perceptions of principals. This qualitative case study aimed to fill that gap by exploring how alumni of one social justice–themed University Teacher Preparation Program (UTPP) defined and implemented socially just teaching practices in urban elementary classrooms. Participants included six teacher alumni in their first, second, or third year of teaching, two supervising principals, and one UTPP staff member. Methods included semistructured interviews, full-day classroom observations, and a review …
Educating For Social Justice: Drawing From Catholic Social Teaching, James R. Valadez, Philip S. Mirci Dr. (Ph.D.)
Educating For Social Justice: Drawing From Catholic Social Teaching, James R. Valadez, Philip S. Mirci Dr. (Ph.D.)
Journal of Catholic Education
This article uses a duoethnographic process to develop a model for socially just education based on social justice theory and Catholic social teaching. Three major issues are addressed, including: (a) the definition of socially just education, (b) explaining a vision for establishing socially just schools, and (c) providing a practical guide for educational leaders to promote social justice ideals. The authors propose a vision for socially just education that calls for schools to instill social justice virtues into young people, much as one would instill virtues such as morality, honesty, and fairness. As Pieper (2003) declared: “the good [person] is …
Expected And Unexpected Outcomes Of A Service-Learning Program Rooted In Social Justice And Pragmatic Constructivism, Jeffrey M. Jenkins
Expected And Unexpected Outcomes Of A Service-Learning Program Rooted In Social Justice And Pragmatic Constructivism, Jeffrey M. Jenkins
LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations
Service-learning, an experiential learning and teaching pedagogy, provides students and teachers the opportunity to take classroom knowledge and put it to work in real world applications in the greater community. This qualitative case study dissertation explored the expected and unexpected outcomes of a service-learning program at an urban charter high school. Through a review of current literature, the history of service-learning is traced from its modern roots to present day incarnations. Grounded in the overlapping frameworks of pragmatic constructivist theory and practice, and service-learning with a social justice model, best practices were examined through interviews and focus groups of current …
Preferential Options And Palimpsests: Transferring The Founders’ Catholic Charism From Vowed Religious Educators To Lay Educators, Patrick Paschal Lynch
Preferential Options And Palimpsests: Transferring The Founders’ Catholic Charism From Vowed Religious Educators To Lay Educators, Patrick Paschal Lynch
LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations
A decline in the number of vowed religious who teach and administer in Catholic high schools has placed the responsibility for transferring the founders’ Charism, the traditional mission and identity of the schools, in the hands of lay educators. This study examined how one Catholic independent single-sex high school established programs and methods to transfer the founders’ Charism to its lay educators and students in the areas of social justice, diversity, and social and political awareness.
The researcher collected data about Charism transference by interviewing five adults selected as a purposive sample and conducting focus groups with 15 students selected …
The Catholic School Principal And Inclusive Leadership: A Quantitative Study, Jayne M. Quinn
The Catholic School Principal And Inclusive Leadership: A Quantitative Study, Jayne M. Quinn
LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations
The Holy See (2008) and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (1995) stated that all students, including those with disabilities, have the right to a quality education and special attention should be given to those who are disenfranchised by having a disability (National Conference of Catholic Bishops, 1972). Based on a literature review of characteristics that embrace inclusive Catholic school leadership in elementary schools in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the following research question was developed and used as the focus for this study: How prepared do Catholic elementary school principals see themselves in carrying out the responsibilities of …
