Remembrance Of A Christian Brothers’ Education, James R. Valadez Oct 2019

Remembrance Of A Christian Brothers’ Education, James R. Valadez

Journal of Catholic Education

This study describes the experiences of a group of individuals who attended a southern California Catholic boys’ high school, and the men who taught them. The goal of this study was to relate a narrative that explained how an education, steeped in the Christian Brothers’ mission provided a quality education for the poor, and shaped the lives, perspectives, and values of the graduates. The narrative, reported through a social perspective inspired by Catholic Social Teaching (CST), the philosophical writings of Jacques Maritain and Alisdair MacIntyre, showed how the graduates received a quality education from the Brothers, and absorbed a strong …

Beauty, Bees, And God: The Fibonacci Sequence As A Theological Springboard In Secondary Mathematics, John D. Brahier Oct 2019

Beauty, Bees, And God: The Fibonacci Sequence As A Theological Springboard In Secondary Mathematics, John D. Brahier

Journal of Catholic Education

Catholic schools primarily should be in the business of making saints. This article identifies and explores a meaningful, engaging point of contact between mathematics and theology for high school math classes, the Fibonacci Sequence. This sequence serves as an engaging introduction to sequences and series; more importantly, the topic can be used as a springboard to theological discussions. The paper will provide a brief historical background to the Fibonacci Sequence, an explanation of how it can be used in a high school math classroom, and an exploration of three different theological touchpoints that the Fibonacci Sequence offers.

Mcvey Dr., Susan R. Poyo Dr.

Journal of Catholic Education

Abstract

The preparation of effective, knowledgeable and caring educators whose mission is to serve society through direct contact with and instruction of students, is the topic of this action research. We sought to determine how we as a teacher preparation program within a dynamic Catholic university could ensure that our Catholic identity was truly evident and nurtured in our teacher candidates as they prepare to engage in the extremely important job of offering what is a universal right to an education to PK-12 students, in a variety of learning environments. The analysis of this teacher preparation program included a review …

Defining Catholic Higher Education In Positive Terms, Michael Rizzi Oct 2019

Defining Catholic Higher Education In Positive Terms, Michael Rizzi

Journal of Catholic Education

Debates about Catholic higher education in the United States sometimes focus too much on what Catholic colleges and universities should not do, rather than what they should do. This article attempts to reframe those debates away from the negative expressions of Catholic identity (i.e., denying guests a right to speak on campus based on their stance on abortion) and toward more positive expressions, like promoting scholarship on Catholic history, culture, and theology. It reviews some key academic literature that approaches Catholic identity from this positive, proactive perspective, and attempts to categorize that literature into common, identifiable themes.

Special Education In Catholic Schools Viewed From A Liberatory Hermeneutic, Mary Carlson, Jeffrey Labelle Oct 2019

Special Education In Catholic Schools Viewed From A Liberatory Hermeneutic, Mary Carlson, Jeffrey Labelle

Journal of Catholic Education

This study explores anew the issue of providing special education in Catholic schools by viewing the ethical implications from a liberatory hermeneutic. By utilizing an interdisciplinary perspective, the research draws upon liberation theology, liberation psychology, liberation pedagogy, and liberation ethics to support the moral mandate for providing education for all God’s children, including those persons with disabilities. The study challenges Catholic educational leaders to reimagine their positions on how schools might promote a more inclusive, liberatory approach to serving the special needs of children with disabilities. Finally, this research provides a Catholic, liberatory, ethical framework for inclusive Catholic education to …

The Influence Of School Catholicity On Sport Educator-Coaches, Matt Hoven, Trevor Egli Oct 2019

The Influence Of School Catholicity On Sport Educator-Coaches, Matt Hoven, Trevor Egli

Journal of Catholic Education

In practice, sports often play a major role in shaping the identity of Catholic schools. Theorists consider how to better integrate religious faith into sports programs. We argue that it is also imperative to investigate how the schools' catholicity influences educator-coaches experiences of sport. Based upon analysis of a phenomenological research project in Edmonton, Canada, our study uncovered factors of lift (i.e., feeling part of something bigger, mentor-coaches as doers of the Word, and communal or relational elements) and drag (i.e., treatment of non-Catholics, seeking an authentic faith, and a lack of reflection on the integration of sport and faith). …

Schism Or Communion? A Discussion Of The Morality Of Online Learning Through A Christian/Catholic Lens, Michael K. Barbour, Jason Paul Siko, Mark Beadle, Greg Bitgood Jul 2019

Schism Or Communion? A Discussion Of The Morality Of Online Learning Through A Christian/Catholic Lens, Michael K. Barbour, Jason Paul Siko, Mark Beadle, Greg Bitgood

Journal of Catholic Education

While massive open online courses (MOOCs) garnered plenty of attention at the beginning of the decade, initial findings about their value have been disappointing. In particular, only a narrow range of participants appear to be successful in completing and passing these unmonitored courses: white, educated, affluent males. One prominent Catholic scholar, Jonathan Malesic, went as far as saying that the very nature of MOOCs does not align with Catholic teachings of learning through social interaction, adapting to the needs of the learner, and teaching (i.e., successfully) the masses. Further, by extension, he applied these criticisms to online learning in general. …

"It's More Than Just Religion:" Teaching History In A Catholic School, Colleen Fitzpatrick May 2019

"It's More Than Just Religion:" Teaching History In A Catholic School, Colleen Fitzpatrick

Journal of Catholic Education

This study explores how one teacher, Rebecca, makes sense of teaching history in a Catholic school. This Catholic school had a clear religious mission and did not have required curriculum or high-stakes tests. Yet, findings indicate that Rebecca did not attend to the religious mission in her teaching and, in absence of curricula or high-stakes tests, she relied heavily on the textbook. Findings demonstrate the need for a greater understanding of what curricular content is being taught and learned in Catholic elementary and secondary schools and how it aligns with the mission and purpose of Catholic schools.

More Schools, Larger Schools, Or Both? Patterns Of Enrollment Growth In K12 Catholic Schools Globally, Quentin Wodon May 2019

More Schools, Larger Schools, Or Both? Patterns Of Enrollment Growth In K12 Catholic Schools Globally, Quentin Wodon

Journal of Catholic Education

After the governments of China and India, the Catholic Church is probably the third largest provider of K12 education in the world. How has growth in enrollment in K12 Catholic schools varied across countries over the last two decades? Which countries have accounted for most of the growth at the regional and global level? What has been the role of the number of schools and the size of schools in enrollment growth, or in the decline observed in some countries? Given trends towards higher enrollment in the developing world due to population growth and higher educational attainment, has enrollment growth …

Making A Difference:The Promise Of Catholic School Standards, Lorraine A. Ozar, Patricia Weitzel-O’Neill, Teresa Barton, Elizabeth Calteaux, Cristina J. Hunter Phd, Shiya Yi

Journal of Catholic Education

Abstract: The National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools (NSBECS) were published in 2012 to serve as both a guide and assessment tool for PK-12 Catholic school effectiveness and sustainability; they include research-based general school effectiveness criteria, as well as criteria unique to Catholic school mission and identity. The NSBECS rests on the conviction that adhering to these standards and benchmarks with fidelity will result in highly effective Catholic schools. This Catholic Schools Standards Study Phase 1 began the work of examining the validity of the NSBECS through two national surveys: Survey 1 (2015) focused …

Seminarian Sentiments About Catholic Schools, Kevin J. Calkins, John J. Convey May 2019

Seminarian Sentiments About Catholic Schools, Kevin J. Calkins, John J. Convey

Journal of Catholic Education

Three hundred sixty-one seminarians from the 48 diocesan seminaries in the United States and the North American College in Rome, Italy responded to a survey regarding their sentiments about the value of Catholic schools, their effectiveness, and the importance of financially supporting them. The results suggest that while diocesan seminarians are generally supportive of Catholic schools, they are more positive about the value of Catholic schools and the importance of providing financial support than they are about the effectiveness of Catholic schools, especially their religious effectiveness. The seminarians’ sentiments toward value and financial support are comparable to those of previous …

Instructional Practices Of High School Religion Teachers, Marianne H. Mcgah May 2019

Instructional Practices Of High School Religion Teachers, Marianne H. Mcgah

Journal of Catholic Education

High school religion teachers in Catholic schools are central to the mission of such schools and teach in every Catholic high school. Research on effective teaching has not traditionally included this subset of teachers. The overall purpose of this study was to research the best instructional practices for high school religion teachers in Washington State, explore how to best implement the best practices, and explore what opportunities for sharing best practices teachers currently have. The Survey of Instructional Practices (SIP) was created, piloted, revised, and administered in this study. The SIP provided information from high school religion teachers in Washington …

Tolkien’S Allegory: Using Peter Jackson’S Vision Of Fellowship To Illuminate Male Adolescent Catholic Education, Adam P. Zoeller, Thomas E. Malewitz Ph.D.

Journal of Catholic Education

With many of the Catholic student population disengaged from regular ritual experiences their working vocabulary of the prayers and knowledge of the Church is limited. A beneficial bridge for many of these disconnected students, specifically male adolescents has been the use of storytelling in connection to Catholic themes to lay the foundations of ritual and deeper concepts through a more familiar setting. Through media literary, multi-modal instruction and Scripture exegesis adolescents can begin to recognize, understand, and feel a connection with the severity of the sacrifice of the Apostles in following Jesus of Nazareth. This article will offer some insights …
