Into The Storm: Ecological And Sociological Impediments To Black Males’ Persistence In Engineering Graduate Programs, Brian A. Burt, Krystal L. Williams, William A. Smith

While much is known about how Black students negotiate and navigate undergraduate studies, there is a dearth of research on what happens when these students enter graduate school. This article presents the results of a study of 21 Black male graduate students in engineering from one highly ranked research-intensive institution. This article provides evidence of structurally racialized policies within the engineering college (e.g., admissions) and racialized and gendered interactions with peers and advisors that threaten Black males’ persistence in engineering. The Power Of Language: Exploring Foundations Of Neoliberalism In Federal Financial Aid Policy, Brian A. Burt, Lorenzo D. Baber

Despite claims that colleges and universities are isolated from ideological preferences, sociopolitical discourse regularly shapes policies and practices of postsecondary education. This article considers how national discourse on federal aid for postsecondary education during the 1970s reflected a monumental shift in higher education policy. Specifically, we critique neoliberalism, a tenet of Critical Race Theory (CRT), to examine key testimonies from six expert educational leaders during a 1978 hearing on the Middle Income Student Assistance Act (MISAA). The rapid needs assessment and response technique (RNR) is a useful tool for Extension professionals seeking ways to improve workshop structure. Facilitators using RNR organize workshop participants in small groups and then rotate the groups through a series of stations where participants dialogue on questions central to the workshop topic. The technique helps adult learners actively engage with one another, thus improving their ability to learn the subject matter. Use of RNR also allows facilitators to understand participants' existing knowledge of a workshop topic and tailor their education to participants' specific questions and needs.

This qualitative, ethnographic research inquiry intends to prompt further conversation about how scholar-practitioners in the social sciences approach divisive topics such as immigration policy in teacher education. This conceptual essay argues that many access and equity issues facing marginalized populations in higher education is owed to a postsecondary polyglossia, or, a penetrable, learned, set of unique language registers necessary for one to access and navigate institutions of higher education both inside and outside of their physical and metaphysical walls. Facilitating the transmission of this postsecondary polyglossia is Donald Davidson’s notion of the conceptual scheme, or, structures meant to interpret and transmit culture through language. This autoethnography examines the experiences of an assistant professor of elementary social studies methods at a predominantly White institution (PWI). Drawing on the Latina/o Critical Race Theory (LatCrit) methodology of testimonio, the assistant professor in this study, who self-identifies as Chicano, intentionally situates Latinx immigration counter-narratives as oppositional stories to the master narrative of “who belongs.” Using a Critical Race Theory (CRT) framework for analysis, this paper argues that counter-narratives serve as necessary correctives for reconceptualizing racist, essentialist, and nativist master narratives. In this conceptual essay, I address the question “Who Belongs” by examining how Critical Race Theory (CRT) and Latino Critical Theory (LatCrit) can inform an understanding of how the U.S. immigration climate relates to undocumented Latinx college students. Tim Wise is an antiracist activist, essayist and author of seven books on racism, inequality and white privilege. He is among the most prominent anti-racist writers and educators in the United States. Over the past 25 years he has engaged audiences in all 50 states, at over 1000 college and high school campuses, at hundreds of professional and academic conferences, and to community groups across the country. While visiting Iowa State University Tim Wise interviewed with us to discuss Who Belongs? by providing a brief historical perspective of immigration, the current political climate, and the role of activism.

For the past eight years, the ACS Examinations Institute has been developing Anchoring Concepts Content Maps for the different subdisciplines taught throughout the undergraduate curriculum. The structure of the map consists of two top levels that are shared throughout the entire curriculum and two subdiscipline specific levels that contain finer-grained content details. The ACS Examinations Institute has been developing Anchoring Concepts Content Maps to provide an organizational template for the four-year undergraduate chemistry curriculum. In order to accomplish this goal, specific subdisciplinary versions of the map share the two top levels but distinguish themselves at the bottom two levels which contain finer-grained content details. This structure has been refined and vetted over a number of meetings and workshops. This paper presents the four levels of the content map for physical chemistry.

Since the 1970s, one strand of second language (L2) pedagogy has been concerned with imparting behaviors and techniques to learners that they can use independently to improve their learning and use of the target language. This strand, known as strategy instruction (SI), has faced a number of challenges including overdependence on teachers for instruction, competition for space in already crowded syllabuses, and the need to provide individualized practice and feedback on strategy use. Accurate metacognitive monitoring of one’s own knowledge or performance is a precondition for self-regulated learning; monitoring informs metacognitive control, which in turn affects task outcomes. Studies of monitoring accuracy and its connection to knowledge and performance are common in psychology and educational research but rare in instructed SLA. This paper describes two studies in which actual performance and self-evaluated performance were compared. Researchers have paid considerable attention towards understanding why students experience academic difficulties in college, particularly with regards to student persistence (Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005). Conceptualizing Co-Enrollment: Accounting For Student Experiences Across The Curriculum, Michael Geoffrey Brown, R. Matthew Demonbrun, Stephanie D. Teasley

In this study, we develop and test three measures for conceptualizing the potential impact of co-enrollment in different courses on students’ changing risk for academic difficulty in a focal course. Two of these measures, concurrent enrollment in at least one difficult course and academic difficulty in the prior week in courses other than the focal course, significantly increase students’ odds of academic difficulty in the focal course in our models. Our results have implications for the designs of Early Warning Systems and suggest that academic planners consider the relationship between course coenrollment and students’ academic success.

This study examines several cases of Chinese VIP-TOEFL-prep speaking teachers (how do they teach and what do they use in class). This study also seeks to elicit those teachers’ perceptions of some communicative speaking tasks, which are one-on-one interviews, paired/group discussion, computer as interlocutor. Paired/group discussion and presentation in the virtual environment were used in interviews and questionnaires as additional communicative speaking tasks.
