The difficulty level of college courses has been identified as a value which varies across courses. A sample of fifty (50) introductory-level college courses was selected and four different measures of course difficulty, (1) perceived difficulty, (2) perceived amount of work, (3) average grade awarded, and (4) average ACT composite of enrolled students, were calculated for each course. The difficulty estimates were examined for consistency for each measure individually, over time, and in comparison with the others. The current study had two components: Study 1 and Study 2. The purpose of Study 1 was to examine variables that predict graduation from the Iowa State University Teacher Education Program among 2,008 prospective teacher education students who were enrolled in a beginning education course. The analyses were conducted separately for male and female students;College grade point average when enrolled in a beginning education course was the strongest predictor of graduation in teacher education for both male and female students.
