This dissertation is an inquiry into the apparent absence of participatory approaches in instructional design (ID). It explores the question "what happens when ID becomes participatory?" with the help of three articles. Distance education and web-based courses are now mainstream in the U.S. higher education involving over 80% of four year public universities and growing (NCES, 2003). This study investigated the relationships between students' characteristics and their perception of web-based learning and satisfaction with distance learning in five Web-based undergraduate biology courses in a Midwestern university. This quantitative study surveyed 279 students and used multivariate statistical techniques. The purpose of this quantitative research study was to explore instructional computer use by faculty members in the College of Education (COE) at an Anatolian university in Turkey. The faculty members in the study reported low levels of use and expertise in instructional computer technologies. This study explores if media affect attention patterns for subjects reading text. A series of typography studies done in the mid-1990's show that typography for the computer screen does differ from print standards. This qualitative case study examined the experiences of three preservice teachers who enrolled in a teacher preparation program that was conceived and implemented through a collaborative effort between a college, a K--12 school, and a regional education agency. Specifically, this study uncovered the perceptions of the preservice teachers as they were mentored by a classroom teacher throughout the program's three-year extensive field experiences, and the perceptions of mentoring by the classroom teacher. In the debate over the impact of technology and instructional methods on student learner outcomes, there has been no clear winner. This study utilized path analysis techniques to examine these effects. Data was gathered from 6 middle school mathematics classes including 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students (N = 372). Discriminant analysis showed significant differences between the groups, but the model elements captured that variance well enough to predict group membership correctly 82% of the time. Using data from the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS:88), path analytic procedures were performed to test an ecological model of the effects of family, individual and school characteristics on the academic African American students. A distinctive study is the inclusion of school computer use in the model. The study results show that several of the variables directly or indirectly affected 12th grade academic achievement.
