Novel methods to increase crop productivity are required to meet anticipated demands for food, feed, fiber, and fuel. It is becoming feasible to use modern sensors and data analysis techniques for predicting plant growth and productivity based on genomic, phenotypic, and environmental data. To design and construct crops that deliver desired traits requires trained personnel with scientific and engineering expertise as well as a variety of “soft” skills. Design Mentor Statement: This ensemble was completed as part of a class project in a senior level creative design class that I taught. The goal of the project was for students to explore methods of fabric manipulation and combine two or more methods into a creative ensemble. Each student completed a sample notebook of at least ten different fabric manipulation techniques. Each student also engaged in a fashion research process, documented through a 20-page sketchbook, and culminating in a mood board (Figure 1). Design Mentor Statement: This work was a class project in my creative design processes class. Students were challenged to incorporate two or more fabric manipulation techniques into a wearable art ensemble based on their design research. Each student engaged in an extensive design research process, seeking information from a variety of visual, verbal, 2D, and 3D sources. From the research, students created 20 sketchbook pages, juxtaposing images and text from a wide range of sources with their own inspiration sketches. Using thrifted garments for analysis in an introductory textiles course was designed to increase transfer of learning. Prior to the introduction of the assignment, students had difficulty transferring the information into contexts beyond lab samples provided in class. This assignment was created so students could apply course content to garments that they selected. Students were asked to purchase garments to cut up and analyze throughout the semester. Previously, two visual merchandising courses were taught as lecture-based classes with no real-world applications. The instructors wanted to reinforce student knowledge of lectured concepts by incorporating various modes of creative teaching to provide hands-on application and real-world experiences to help students transfer learning to different contexts (National Research Council, 2000). The challenge was circumventing the lack of current program resources and limited available storage space. The purpose of this study was to identify how students perceived their interaction with historic items of dress influenced their learning in a 20th century fashion history course. Students in this study were enrolled in a 20th century fashion history course at a university in the Midwest United States. At the end of the semester, students wrote a reflection focused on how their interaction with artifacts throughout the semester influenced their learning. Assessment Of Peer Presentations As An Instructional Tool In An Introductory Fashion Course, Sara Jablon-Roberts, Diane Mccrohan, Amrut Sadachar

The purpose of this study is to determine if student knowledge of influential fashion designers increased in response to peer presentations and if students valued this method of learning. In an introductory fashion course, pairs of students developed and delivered a short oral and visual presentation about an assigned designer. Pre- and posttests asked about familiarity with these designers. Through paired sample t-test, there is strong evidence (t = 15.04, p = .000) that peer presentations improved student recognition of designers and their contributions. SnapFashun, a plugin software used in conjunction with Adobe Illustrator (SnapFashun, 2017), was previously used in a visual merchandising course to create a final project: a digital retail store. Due to technological problems and student frustrations, an alternative was chosen: The Sims4™ programs. Most students lack practical experiences with constructing the internal structure such as underlining, boning, and waist stays are essential to support strapless dresses (Khalje, 1997). Therefore, these concepts were taught in a junior-level draping course, which covered eveningwear.
