Development Of K-12 Lessons Plans That Integrate Construction Engineering And Mathematics And Align With Educational Standards, Nancy Nicho

Creative Components

This research project works towards the integration of the fields of (a) math education, (b) construction engineering and (c) architecture for the Interdisciplinary Graduate Study program. These three topic areas are integrated into a single project which involves the development of several lesson plans, with the goal of teaching K-12 students, through hands-on interactive activities, about the design, construction, and operation of buildings within the built environment. These lessons plans serve several purposes, specifically (1) to introduce students to the concepts of architecture and construction engineering, particularly how these fields encourage sustainability and comfort in the built environment, and (2 ...

Critical Race Theoretical Composition Pedagogy And Its Effects, Paula Fender Jan 2018

Critical Race Theoretical Composition Pedagogy And Its Effects, Paula Fender

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research study explores the composing practices of several first-year composition students in two English 250 classes offered at Iowa State University. The study examines and analyzes intercultural awareness students have regarding race, diversity, and life, their own and others’. Using the inductive analysis research design, the research establishes a baseline perspective of students as they perceive themselves or not perceive themselves as “raced bodies.” Additionally, the baseline informs concurrent and emerging themes that students portray when exploring their own self-authorship and their persistent beliefs about how race and culture are or are not significant to composition studies. The relevance ...

Implementation Of The Food Safety Modernization Act Among Fruit And Vegetable Processors In The North Central Region, Jacques Ludwig Alexander Overdiep Iii Jan 2018

Implementation Of The Food Safety Modernization Act Among Fruit And Vegetable Processors In The North Central Region, Jacques Ludwig Alexander Overdiep Iii

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) is a food safety law that changed the way food companies are regulated to prevent foodborne illnesses. The FSMA Preventive Controls for Human Food rule was released September 2016 for facilities in manufacturing, processing, packing, and holding of human food. The North Central Region (NCR) Center for FSMA Training, Extension and Technical Assistance was founded by the Food and Drug Administration to assist with the education of processors around the Midwest. The NCR Center funded a project with three phases designed to help small fruit and vegetable processors in the Midwest understand their relationship ...

Teaching Structural Analysis With A Mobile Augmented Reality Application, Suhan Yao Jan 2018

Teaching Structural Analysis With A Mobile Augmented Reality Application, Suhan Yao

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Structural analysis is a core course taught in every undergraduate civil engineering program and most architectural and construction engineering programs. Despite the critical role of this subject matter in engineering education, students usually have difficulty in grasping the abstract concepts, visualizing the deformed shape of simple structures, and relating basic structural members to more complex structural systems such as buildings and bridges. To help students to visualize the structural behaviors as well as linking structural representations with physical structures, a mobile augmented reality (AR) application, iStructAR, was developed. Through the application, a real campus building is superimposed with a virtual ...

Perceived Distance And Instructional Design In Online Agriculture And Life Science Courses, Yahya S. Alotibi Jan 2018

Perceived Distance And Instructional Design In Online Agriculture And Life Science Courses, Yahya S. Alotibi

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to describe relationships between factors that influence perceived transactional distance (course structure, course interaction, and learner autonomy) and instructional design aspects that help to reduce transactional distance from the learner's perspective. Using Transactional Distance Theory. Specifically, the study sought to identify the extent to which learners felt they were distant from their online course and describe relationships between online students’ perceived distance and factors of transactional distance (course structure, interactions, and learner autonomy).

An online survey was disseminated to 271 students who enrolled in online courses in the College of Agriculture and ...

Cogna/Te/Do/To: How To Use Cognates In English, Spanish, And Portuguese, Nancy A. Acosta Jan 2018

Cogna/Te/Do/To: How To Use Cognates In English, Spanish, And Portuguese, Nancy A. Acosta

Creative Components

This creative component introduces the concept of cognates and false cognates through sequential art. This guide on cognates leads the reader through a fictional society whose core philosophy is centered around languages and the preservation of any that they come across. By using storytelling elements present both in comic book work (sound effects, emotive characters, sequential order) and in graphic design (information hierarchy, semiotics), the story builds a connection between the material and the reader. Cognates here can be a tool for English speakers to acquire vocabulary of Spanish and Portuguese. With the main character of an ex-astronaut, who was ...
