Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Conference Proceedings and Presentations

Courses delivered entirely online allow universities to enroll a large number of students, but these large classes pose several challenges to educators. Two major challenges of large online learning environments are the development of appropriate learning activities and the encouragement of significant learning interactions between students. This presentation will discuss strategies used to encourage participatory learning and student interaction in a technology course with an enrollment of 170-200 students. Recommendations for managing other details of large courses in an online format will also be offered.

Those of us working with publically funded family and consumer sciences (FCS) programs have a dream that we are valued, our work is sustainable, we make a difference in people's lives, and we are recognized for the public value we provide. However, current political forces make this dream a challenge. This article describes a much-needed public value movement for FCS and how to determine and share our public value.

The Instruction Assessment Task Force was formed in May 2011, and charged to develop a standardized set of questions and standard scale to be used for all Instructional Sessions (IS), including primarily course-related instruction (CRI) sessions, workshops, and seminars. The Task Force was also charged with recommending a model for centralized IS assessment procedures, including collection (electronic and in print), analysis, retention, and reporting. The Task Force was also asked to recommend a model for data use for teaching improvement and annual professional development, and to consider privacy of data issues.
