School quality is very much on the minds of Iowans and many others. Real (constant-dollar) spending per pupil in Iowa public K-12 schools has increased steadily since 1960 up to 1992-93 when it flattened out. Per-pupil real expenditures are an eye-popping 2.8 times larger than in 1960, and the pupil-teacher ratio has declined about 34 percent -- mostly between 1970 and 1990.

Can Private School Subsidies Increase Enrollment For The Poor? The Quetta Urban Fellowship Program, Jooseop Kim, Harold Alderman, Peter F. Orazem

This study evaluates a program designed to stimulate girls' schooling through the creation of private girls' schools in poor urban neighborhoods of Quetta, Pakistan. Enrollment growth in these randomly selected neighborhoods is compared to enrollment growth in otherwise similar neighborhoods that were randomly assigned to a control group. The analysis indicates that the program increased girls' enrollment around 33 percentage points. Boys' enrollment rose as well, partly because boys were allowed to attend the new schools and partly because parents would not send their girls to school without also educating their boys. Research has suggested that rural youth have lower educational and occupational aspirations than their nonrural counterparts, and they may experience barriers to educational and occupational attainment. Discrepancies and barriers that may exist have implications for educational policy and educational planning;Seventeen rural high schools in northwest Iowa were examined; thirteen public and four private schools. This study examined social information processing as a function of level of depression, anxiety, aggression and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children. Multiple informants were used to identify symptoms of depression, anxiety, aggression and ADHD in 141 fifth grade children in an Iowa middle school. 91 of these students were randomly selected to be interviewed with an instrument consisting of six vignettes depicting social situations relevant to this age group. One type of experience in higher education today that encourages students to get involved in their learning, both in and outside of the classroom, are learning communities. Learning communities are "relatively small groups of students (and faculty) working together to enhance and integrate students' learning and to help students become well-rounded, broad based individuals" (Lenning & Ebbers, 1999, p. 15). Learning communities, when intentionally structured and centered on learning outcomes, enable students, faculty, and student affairs professionals to shape and mold the learning experience, and to do so in an energized environment. Ultimately, learning communities can increase retention, and improve student academic performance. This study investigated the longitudinal effects of a Living Learning Center (LLC) on women studying engineering, science, and Mathematics; The intervention was designed to decrease social isolation within women studying traditionally male-dominated career fields. Secondary goals included increasing LLC participants' retention within nontraditional academic majors and enhancing LLC participants' academic performance within nontraditional courses of study.
