Methods And Apparatus For Teaching Science And Engineering, Thomas J. Greenbowe, Monica A. Mcphillen

Iowa State University Patents

The apparatus for teaching science and engineering is an interactive multimedia computer system which is used to simulate the performance of scientific experiments on the computer screen. An experiment is a method for determining the value of one experimental parameter by measuring the value of another using an experimental configuration of devices and apparatus. The interactions of the devices and apparatus in the experimental configuration are governed by a relationship among the experimental parameters that define the configuration. The user of the teaching apparatus assembles a pictorial representation of the experimental configuration on the computer screen and interacts with the ...

A Comparison Of Research Findings Obtained Through Focus Group Sessions With Those Acquired Through Surveys , Paul Thomas Hillyer Jan 1998

A Comparison Of Research Findings Obtained Through Focus Group Sessions With Those Acquired Through Surveys , Paul Thomas Hillyer

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study sought to answer the questions: (1) Are there significant differences in the answers gained through focus group sessions and answers gained from surveying the larger population from which the focus group participants were taken? (2) Can focus group findings be generalized to the larger population?;To answer these questions focus group sessions were conducted which asked participants to give their opinions on a teacher evaluation plan that was being piloted in the Mesa, Arizona, public schools. Each of four groups was asked ten questions related to various components of the proposed evaluation model. After each focus group session ...

Assessment Of The United States Information Agency Sponsored University Affiliation Project Between Iowa State University And The National Agriculture University Of Ukraine Using The Concerns-Based Adoption Model (Cbam), Victor A. Udin Jan 1998

Assessment Of The United States Information Agency Sponsored University Affiliation Project Between Iowa State University And The National Agriculture University Of Ukraine Using The Concerns-Based Adoption Model (Cbam), Victor A. Udin

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The problem of this study was to evaluate the success of the Iowa State University (ISU) Linkage project (Crawford & Melnichuk, 1994) at the National Agricultural University of Ukraine (NAUU). The evaluation of the project's success and the educational changes it brought about were accomplished by determining the levels of use of the key elements of this change: the revised curriculum, new methods of teaching, and new teaching materials used at NAUU. This program evaluation research of the Linkage project was conducted based on the Concerns-Based Adoption Model (CBAM). The Levels of Use dimension of the Concerns-Based Adoption Model was applied to determine if the Linkage project was successful; The survey questionnaire consisted of sections describing the NAUU participants': demographic characteristics; knowledge of the English language; understanding of the essence of the Linkage project; awareness of the administrative changes at NAUU; and levels of use of the new curriculum developed as the result of the Linkage project. Statistical analysis revealed that neither demographic characteristics nor administrative reform has a relation to the levels of use of the main results of the Linkage project. The school environment was the only factor ...

Safety In The Chemistry Curriculum At Iowa State University, Gordon J. Miller, Paul Richmond Jan 1998

Safety In The Chemistry Curriculum At Iowa State University, Gordon J. Miller, Paul Richmond

Chemistry Publications

At Iowa State University we have developed and are continuing to design programs into our undergraduate and graduate curricula that will establish a sound practice of proper chemical hygiene in the laboratory. Our efforts include: (1) for all entering graduate students, an introductory graduate course to teach proper laboratory procedures and handling of chemicals; (2) for advanced graduate students, a chemistry safety committee which interacts with our university's EH&S department to learn about EPA and OSHA requirements so as to maintain a high level of safety awareness throughout our research labs; and (3) for our undergraduate introductory chemistry students, supplementary readings and prelaboratory quizzes designed with chemical safety in mind, e.g., waste handling procedures, first aid, MSDS's, and the ...

Contamination In Glove Materials And The Effectiveness Of Cleanup Methods With Exposure To Granular Pesticides , Chuanpu Guo Jan 1998

Contamination In Glove Materials And The Effectiveness Of Cleanup Methods With Exposure To Granular Pesticides , Chuanpu Guo

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purposes of this study were (1) to determine the effects of various exposure times and pesticide composition on contamination levels and breakthrough times of nitrile, neoprene, and barrier laminate glove materials exposed to two granular pesticides: terbufos (CounterRTM 20CR) and tefluthrin (forceRTM 3G) and (2) to determine the effects of cleanup methods, detergent, and laundering temperature on reduction of pesticide contamination;Three experiments were conducted. In experiment 1, breakthrough time and contamination levels were studied by exposing alpha-cellulose backed glove material specimens to pesticide granules in petri dishes for set time periods up to 24 hours. In experiment 2 ...
