Cherri And Lisa Go To India, Cherri Trusheim, Lisa Reising Jan 1998

Cherri And Lisa Go To India, Cherri Trusheim, Lisa Reising

Iowa State University Veterinarian

We spent 30 difficult days in the beautiful but impoverished country of India. Prior to the trip we made a small attempt to acquaint ourselves with the Indian culture and prepare for the shock of visiting a third-world country. Neither of us had traveled overseas before. We came to the conclusion (after the first day) that this was something that had to be experienced to comprehend, and reading a few books, watching documentaries on the Discovery Channel, or listening to others speak of their experiences while visiting the country did not do the job. Knowing a second language is always ...

Causerie, Elizabeth L. Carney

Iowa State University Veterinarian

Greetings from the office of the ISU Veterinarian! As I sit and reflect on my time as editor of this unique publication, I am struck by how fast time seems to have gone since I took on this task a volume ago. At that time, I felt certain I was up to the job if only I could figure out exactly what I was supposed to do when! Three issues later, I have a clearer idea of what it takes to make this journal a reality, and perhaps I would be less apt to agree to the job had I ...

How The East Met The West, Leah Braas Jan 1998

How The East Met The West, Leah Braas

Iowa State University Veterinarian

Recently, in August to be exact, I moved away from everything that I knew and loved and came to Iowa. At first I didn't really understand the transition that would take place in the two-day, 1100 mile trek across the United States. After all, I wasn't leaving the country, just moving to Iowa. Just moving to Iowa. What a statement, I left the land of concrete highways and moved to the land of large, silver belt buckles, and "just moving to Iowa" began to have a whole new meaning.

College Obtains Confocal Microscope, Julie Schneider

Iowa State University Veterinarian

Iowa State University recently acquired a Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope. The microscope is located at 1082 Veterinary Medicine in the Image Analysis facility. Confocal microscopy is an improvement over conventional light and fluorescence microscopy in that a finely focused laser beam that rapidly scans the specimen at a single depth illuminates the specimen. Only a thin plane is illuminated within the object, and objects outside of the plane have little effect on the quality of the image. The result is a crisp, blur-free image. Images from optical sections taken at different depths can be stored in a computer and used ...

Making Your Practice And Facility More User-Friendly For Those With Disabilities, Rebecca Clow, Loren Will

Iowa State University Veterinarian

As veterinarians, our duties extend beyond practicing medicine. We must realize that the veterinary profession requires excellent client communication and we must alter our way of practice to meet client needs. We must do more than compromise, empathize, and explain terms on a client's level. It is critical that we take into consideration the special needs of disabled clients. This paper will discuss some of the legal and ethical aspects of communicating with disabled clients while making your practice more user-friendly to those with these special needs. Dog guides and their care will also be discussed briefly.

A new organization has emerged to meet the increasing demand and need for international opportunities during students' veterinary education. The Committee for International Veterinary Opportunities (ClVO) is a service committee consisting of student representatives and faculty members. The committee's main goals are increasing student awareness of international opportunities, acting as a central source for that information through creating and collecting brochures to be placed into an international veterinary opportunities catalogue, fundraising, and expanding opportunities by establishing new global programs. The students involved are interviewing specific faculty members about programs, selection criteria, application processes, and other information.

Veterinary Medicine In The Land "Down Under", Danelle Bickett

Iowa State University Veterinarian

On June 12, 1997, I arrived in Melbourne, Australia, and a summer of experiences was launched. I spent my first day and night at the veterinary school in Werribee, Victoria, approximately 35 kilometres west of Melbourne. Their veterinary program is quite different from ours in America, as they do one year of science and then four years at a veterinary school. Acceptance into their veterinary schools occurs when they are in year twelve in high school. They must attain a certain grade point and be at or above the ninety-eighth percentile in their class. The average age of graduating veterinarians ...
