Use Of And Satisfaction With Two Types Of Advising Systems Among Engineering Students At Iowa State University , William Francis Jaffe

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

As enrollments decline in institutions of higher education quality academic advising may help reduce student attrition. A quality advising program is one which students use and one with which they express satisfaction. In this study, the academic advising program in a college of engineering was studied, by means of a questionnaire, to describe the role of the advisor in terms of predominant patterns of student use. Another purpose was to determine which type of advising system, faculty-based or professional advisor-based, resulted in greater student use and satisfaction for specific advising needs: assistance with preregistration, class add/drop, curriculum planning, career ...

Relationships Of Organizational Expectations And Trainer Orientations On Methods Used In Training , Kwan Eung Lee Jan 1989

Relationships Of Organizational Expectations And Trainer Orientations On Methods Used In Training , Kwan Eung Lee

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A trainer's managing behaviors in facilitating training programs were assumed to be contingent upon a variety of variables. Studies on the trainer variables suggested that a trainer's educational background, educational orientation about adult teaching, educational philosophy, and organizational climate and expectations were part of the factors affecting the trainer's teaching practice. This research examined how those variables in part or combination attributed to the trainer's preferences of training methods such as teaching arrangements and teaching techniques, and emphasis on training procedures in applying training methods. Additionally, this study investigated how a trainer's educational orientation was ...

Student's Strategies With Learner-Controlled Call, Carol Chapelle, Suesue Mizuno

English Publications

A degree of learner-control is implicit in most current CALL activities; however, research to-date has not investigated students' performance in such environments. This paper reports a first step toward the necessary investigation by documenting students' use of five strategies while they worked on learner-controlled CALL grammar lessons. The results indicated the need for teachers and researchers alike to observe students use of CALL.

Computer simulations also have been shown to be effective in overcoming incorrect preconceptions; The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of text designed to promote conceptual change used in conjunction with an electric circuit simulation ...

School District Consolidation In A Club Goods Framework , James J. Knudsen Jan 1989

School District Consolidation In A Club Goods Framework , James J. Knudsen

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The provision of school district services has been incorporated into the theoretical framework of a club good model. Within this model it is possible to show the potential for benefit or harm from consolidation; When considering school district consolidation it is important to consider the interaction of quality, expenditures, and preferences to analyze the potential for success. The club good model provides this framework; The model produces an ambiguity, however, and it is resolved by first estimating school quality with a multiple input, multiple cause model and then using ordinary least squares to estimate average expenditure curves for different quality ...
