Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated relationships among admission status, standardized test scores, major area of study, and academic outcomes among college freshmen entering directly from high school. The progress of 653 students (585 regular-admission students and 68 open-admission students) was evaluated over a period of four years. In addition, differences in the predictive validity of standardized test scores and high school performance for regular-admission students and open-admission students were examined;Significant differences favoring regular-admission students were observed in grade point averages for each year studied and in graduation rates at the conclusion of four years of instruction. There were also differences favoring ...

Relationships Between Supervisor Ratings Of Teacher Performance And Student Achievement , Bruce E. Daniels

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

If the effectiveness of teachers is to be improved, it is important for those who supervise teachers to be able to identify teacher behaviors which are related to improved student outcomes. The primary purposes of this study were to determine if supervisor ratings of teachers could be used to predict student achievement and to determine which teacher performance criteria are related to higher student achievement in fourth grade mathematics and reading and eighth grade Mathematics; Recent research efforts have identified many teacher behaviors that are related to improved pupil learning. This study assessed teachers on twenty-five observable criteria of teacher ...

Spiritual Development: A Descriptive Study Of College Freshmen At A Selected Institution Of The Christian College Coalition , Alan Stevens Cureton Jan 1989

Spiritual Development: A Descriptive Study Of College Freshmen At A Selected Institution Of The Christian College Coalition , Alan Stevens Cureton

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Historically, Christian liberal arts colleges have claimed that their graduates are different from those of other colleges because of the integration of the Christian faith with academic disciplines. However, little research has been conducted regarding spiritual development in college students at Christian colleges; The investigator used a quantitative instrument designed to ascertain levels of spiritual involvement and faith development among freshmen students at a small midwestern Christian college. The data collected were presented and analyzed descriptively; The data indicate that students attending this institution identified a concerned interest in the spiritual dimension of their lives; generally consider themselves religious in ...

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to examine a meaningful set of data from a longitudinal educational research project using univariate and multivariate methodological approaches. It was hypothesized that the multivariate analysis would provide a more in-depth and complete understanding of the underlying factors. A second purpose was designed to provide a practical, clear, and concise guide for other educational researchers to draw upon; The researcher first explored the possible relationship between teacher education graduates' teaching certification level and their adequacy ratings on 33 areas of preparation in their teacher education program. A comparison was made between the results of ...

Cognitive Abilities, Affective Characteristics And Learning Strategies As Related To Academic Achievement Among First Year Nursing Students: Test Validation And Causal Modelling , Sandra Beermann Chacko

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The present research had two purposes. First, the study was designed to validate the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) (Weinstein, 1987) with undergraduate nursing students. Second, a causal model of learning for undergraduate nursing students was developed and tested. Results of the validation study were used for the development of the model; The data were collected on 134 first-year nursing students enrolled at a Midwestern community college. Analysis of the data included (1) factor analysis of the LASSI data; (2) Cronbach alpha to estimate internal consistencies of the revised LASSI scales; (3) Pearson product-moment correlations to determine the relationships ...

An Analysis Of A Preservice Teacher Structural Equation Model Under Varying Assumptions And Measurement Conditions , Dean K. Frerichs

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purposes of this study were to develop a structural equation model of preservice teacher variables and to examine alternative methods of testing this model under different assumptions and measurement conditions. A conceptual model was posited to examine variables related to job expectations, academic ability, pre-student teaching preparation, satisfaction with cooperating teacher, self-rated student teaching performance, and quality of teacher preparation program; From this conceptual model of preservice teacher variables, five empirical models were developed and analyzed. Models I and II utilized single indicators computed as composite means of the respective observed standardized indicators. Model I assumed variables were measured ...

College Student Involvement And Cognitive Outcomes: A Study Utilizing The Cse And The Comp , Roger K. Hadley

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Recent research indicated that student involvement is related to cognitive outcomes, but more needs to be known. What kinds of involvement contribute to outcomes? Do different kinds of involvement lead to different outcomes for different students? This longitudinal study used standardized measures of involvement and cognitive outcomes to answer these questions;Eighty-eight students from three four-year campuses and one two-year campus in the Midwestern, Southern, and Eastern part of the United States took the Objective Test of the College Outcomes Measures Program (COMP) as entering students as a measure of cognitive outcomes. Two or four years later these same students ...

Overcoming Student Preconceptions About Simple Series Circuits: Promoting Conceptual Change With Text Manipulations And A Microcomputer Simulation , David Don Carlsen

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Preconceptions in science learning have been a subject of increasing study over the past ten years. In the area of electric circuits, students have shown incorrect preconceptions with respect to current, voltage, resistance and short circuits. Research indicates that many students resist changes in their preconceptions. In recent years, text designed to promote conceptual change has been effective in overcoming some preconceptions. Computer simulations also have been shown to be effective in overcoming incorrect preconceptions; The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of text designed to promote conceptual change used in conjunction with an electric circuit simulation ...

A Hypermedia Lesson About 1875-1885 Costume: Cognitive Style, Perceptual Modes, Anxiety, Attitude, And Achievement , Diane Kay Frey

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Cognitive theory focuses attention on mental processes involved in learning. Cognitive theory is based on the view that the human mind interprets information and the individual is central to the learning process. There are individual differences in the ways that information is initially received into the brain. One of the problems associated with the teaching-learning process is determining how learners acquire, store, and recall information; The purpose of this study was to profile students' cognitive styles and to determine relationships among variables that may be associated with how students progress through a computer and videodisc lesson. The lesson is about ...
