The major purpose of this investigation was to examine the clustering of eighteen items of job characteristics of students and graduates of the teacher preparation program at Iowa State University. The study was based on longitudinal research data collected by the Research Institute for Studies in Education at Iowa State University of students enrolled in a beginning teacher course (Education 204) and graduates of the teacher education program at various stages in their careers (graduation from the teacher preparation program, one year following graduation and five years following graduation). This research consisted of two studies. First, benchmark data were collected and summarized for Time One of a time-series/longitudinal study of highly gifted Iowa students. Subjects were 417 seventh and eighth graders who were named Duke Talent Identification Program finalists;Most students were living with their natural parents who were characterized by high levels of education and employment in professional and technical occupations. Most respondents anticipated career choices in the professional and technical categories. Nearly all subjects reported plans to attend college, with public universities being named most often. The purpose of this research was to study psychological type and its relationship to the accomplishment of developmental task. The overall goal was to enhance the understanding of differences among individuals in light of theories of student development. Psychological type was operationalized and measured by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), and developmental tasks were measured by the Student Developmental Task Inventory (SDTI-2);The sample consisted of 220 males and 252 females from incoming freshmen at the University of Maine in 1983 and 1984. The current study examined the characteristics, developmental patterns, organizational environments, and career orientations of successful individuals recognized for their leadership potential. Data were collected by means of a mailed survey. Respondents included 69 males and 38 females whose average age at the time of the study was 37.7 years;Research results suggest that the subjects tended to attribute their success to hard work, common sense, ambition, and desire to excel, and the ability to get things done. College students are subject to a number of influences other than their classroom learning. According to Longino and Kart (1973), the impact that higher education has on its clientele is largely mediated through its subgroups. The role of college residences in the development of the higher education population has been discussed by many authors (Baird, 1969; Chickering, 1972; LonQino & Kart, 1973). Chickering (1972) suggests that residential environments provide an opportunity for student development and the formulation of personal values.
