Evaluating An Instrument For Testout In A Business Communication Course , Carol S. David Jan 1981

Evaluating An Instrument For Testout In A Business Communication Course , Carol S. David

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Enrollment in college business communication courses has increased in the last decade. As a result, departments have had to develop procedures to allow better students to test out of such courses. At Iowa State University a two-phase procedure was developed which uses an initial objective test to screen students for the second phase, a written essay. The screening instrument must discriminate between students who can write at the level of B or better in the course and those who cannot; This study evaluated the test for its ability to predict a student's writing ability. Furthermore, placement errors of two ...

Evaluation Of The Training And Continuing Education For Employment As An Emergency Medical Technician - Ambulance , John Keith Smola

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The training of most Emergency Medical Technicians - Ambulance today was conceived in the 1960s using the medical model of diagnoses and treatment. The demands upon the occupation by society, however, go beyond the limits of the original medical model. The medical model, for Emergency Medical Technicians - Ambulance, ignores interpersonal contact, complications caused by the emotions and values of both the Emergency Medical Technicians - Ambulance and the victim, and the advent of death as a factor in job element problem solving; This evaluative research study diverged from the usual attempt to measure performance standards based upon the application of knowledge, skills ...

Investigation Of Students' Study Habits Under Traditional And Phase Achievement Systems Of Instruction In A College Biology Course , Abdullatif Jassim Al-Hashash

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The present study evaluated the effectiveness of two different systems of instruction, the traditional method and the phase achievement method, and their relationship to different informational variables--use of lectures, textbooks, study guides and video cassette tapes provided for students in a college biology course at Iowa State University. The phase achievement method is a self-paced instructional system which shares some common elements with a personalized system of instruction (PSI), and Bloom's mastery strategy. In this system, learning objectives must be clearly defined, selected, and organized into relatively small units to help students as a guide and to provide levels ...

A History Of The "New Math" Movement In The United States , Robert W. Hayden

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

An Investigation Of Narrative Blend In The Expository Writing Of Students Enrolled In Introductory College Composition Courses , Jane E. Bell

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation makes a contribution to composition research by enacting midrange theorizing that weds competent theoretical hypothesizing with practical classroom application; The researcher first establishes narrative blend as a valid theoretical construct. She operationally defines the construct through creation of an instrument for analysis of narrative blend in expository writing. The construct and the instrument which operationally defines it are then used to test assertions made within an experimental curriculum design calling for the transfer of narrative techniques to expository writing (Shaffer, 1979);The following hypotheses were tested within the study: (1) Narrative techniques in expository writing can be identified ...
