Abstract. In the last 20 years, the bounding approach for the average treatment effect (ATE) has been developing on the theoretical side, however, empirical work has lagged far behind theory in this area. The purpose of this quantitative study was to describe the people and factors that influenced new students’ decisions to attend the colleges of agriculture at two Midwestern land grant universities. Athletics was identified as the most common pre-collegiate activity. Students identified their parent as the most influential person in selecting their college. The top factor which influenced students' college decision was pursuing a career that interested them. The findings from this study can guide recruitment efforts at land-grant universities by allowing institutions to be more intentional with their recruitment efforts. An Analysis Of Classroom Collusion Using Latent Dirichlet Allocation, Charles B. Shrader, Sue P. Ravenscroft, Jeffrey Kaufmann

In this study, we use Latent Dirichlet Allocation to explore the reflections of students who faced a demanding classroom challenge, to which some responded by colluding. Our five-topic LDA solution describes the cheating event in terms of the nature of the course assignment itself, teams as a resource and support mechanism, the repercussions of cheating, and differences between majors or course tracks. The most relevant topics were the differences between the tracks and the repercussions of cheating. Teams and teammates also play a large role in the students’ reflections. We conclude with the implications of these topics in future research.

Combining Academics And Social Engagement: A Major-Specific Early Alert Method To Counter Student Attrition In Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics, Andrew J. Sage, Cinzia Cervato, Ulrike Genschel, Craig Ogilvie

Students are most likely to leave science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors during their first year of college. We developed an analytic approach using random forests to identify at-risk students. This method is deployable midway through the first semester and accounts for academic preparation, early engagement in university life, and performance on midterm exams. By accounting for cognitive and noncognitive factors, our method achieves stronger predictive performance than would be possible using cognitive or noncognitive factors alone. This study examines the effects of an extended authentic research experience on students’ understanding of the nature of science (NOS) and self-efficacy toward science. The curriculum of an introductory physical geology lab was transformed to include a six-week, student-driven research project focused on local groundwater and surface water issues. Students’ NOS understanding was measured by using a modified version of the Student Understanding of Science and Scientific Inquiry questionnaire (n = 181) and their science self-efficacy using a modified vocational self-efficacy survey (n = 179). For the past eight years, the ACS Examinations Institute has been developing Anchoring Concepts Content Maps for the different subdisciplines taught throughout the undergraduate curriculum. The structure of the map consists of two top levels that are shared throughout the entire curriculum and two subdiscipline specific levels that contain finer-grained content details. This paper presents the four levels of the content map for inorganic chemistry.

The ACS Examinations Institute has been developing Anchoring Concepts Content Maps to provide an organizational template for the four-year undergraduate chemistry curriculum. In order to accomplish this goal, specific subdisciplinary versions of the map share the two top levels but distinguish themselves at the bottom two levels which contain finer-grained content details. This structure has been refined and vetted over a number of meetings and workshops. This paper presents the four levels of the content map for physical chemistry.

The research literature on L2 writing processes contains a multitude of insights that could inform writing instruction, but writing teachers are constrained in their capacity to make use of these insights insofar as they lack detailed information about how their students’ actually engage in the processes of writing. At the same time, writing-process researchers have been using powerful technologies to trace writers’ process engagement—namely, keystroke-logging and eye-tracking—that are potentially applicable in educational settings.
