Extension Demonstration: Grameen Microfinance Methods And Capital Access For Low-Income Female Entrepreneurs, Mark A. Edelman

Economics Working Papers

A nonprofit community development financial institution and Extension collaborated to conduct a demonstration project to evaluate efficacy of Grameen peer-group microfinance methodology in addressing barriers faced by lowincome women entrepreneurs in a small metro area. Program performance metrics achieved by 284 low-income, culturally diverse, primarily women entrepreneurs over five years included: a loan repayment rate of 99+ percent, increased average client income, savings accumulation at a local bank, and increased opportunities to improve average credit scores. Client surveys indicated peer-group methods, program structure, incentives for individual behaviors and group responsibilities provided opportunity to develop confidence, leadership skills, and teamwork.

During the halftime of his son’s football game, Farmer Brown asks his smartphone for a real-time cost-effectiveness analysis of three alternative treatments to suppress weeds in two acres over the Missouri River, where remote imagery technology identified weed pressure trending up and nearing 90% of the acre- and corn-stage-specific weed threshold. An Analysis Of Classroom Collusion Using Latent Dirichlet Allocation, Charles B. Shrader, Sue P. Ravenscroft, Jeffrey Kaufmann

In this study, we use Latent Dirichlet Allocation to explore the reflections of students who faced a demanding classroom challenge, to which some responded by colluding. Our five-topic LDA solution describes the cheating event in terms of the nature of the course assignment itself, teams as a resource and support mechanism, the repercussions of cheating, and differences between majors or course tracks. The most relevant topics were the differences between the tracks and the repercussions of cheating. Teams and teammates also play a large role in the students’ reflections. We conclude with the implications of these topics in future research.

This study presents the need for moral development education of current and future professionals so they can help build sustainable companies and global supply chains. Grounded in Ha-Brookshire’s moral responsibility theory of corporate sustainability, the authors explored a set of real-life business situations where business professionals experienced morally challenging dilemmas. Although leadership has received considerable attention from many scholars, much less research has focused on those who follow leaders; yet, followers contribute much to the success of an organization. This study explored the followership profiles of stakeholders in hospitality and tourism education. The findings summarize the followership dimensions of a sample of hospitality students, educators, and industry professionals. For each of the five followership dimensions the mean scores for industry professionals were rated higher when compared with students and educators, with courage to participate in transformation being the highest rated among all three groups. Implications for hospitality education are presented.

Higher education institutions are increasingly using media and Internet for teaching and learning. The 2011 Survey of Online Learning reported that the number of students taking at least one online class was 6.7 million (Allen & Seaman, 2013). Sixty-five percent of higher education organizations perceive online education as a necessary part of their long-term development strategy (Babson Survey Research Group). Moreover, online education not only applies to college students, but also expands to continuing education of industry employees. Increasing technical skill requirements in apparel companies cause employees to need continued training, to keep up with the ever-changing work environment.

Increased use of student response and engagement systems in the collegiate classroom environment is a growing trend in hospitality education. However, faculties have expressed hesitance in adopting this technology due to apprehension of students. Student academic engagement has been researched over the years, drawing limited conclusions and suggestions for improvement. In this study, researchers utilized National Survey for Student Engagement data from a large Midwestern university to examine the academic engagement of hospitality management students and compared their engagement to business students. It was found that 50% of the participating hospitality students spent 11 h or more each week preparing for classes. For both groups, finances were reported as the biggest obstacle to academic progress. The research study provides an examination of hospitality students’ academic engagement. Suggestions are presented for hospitality educators.

This study examines relationships between perceived ethical climate types, as determined using Victor and Cullen’s (1988) ethical climate questionnaire, and actual cheating behavior by students completing a take-home exam problem. Data regarding students’ behavior were gathered from sixty-four students in two sections of an accounting course at a well-known university. Our major finding is that students who perceive the classroom as a benevolent climate focused on local groups (i.e. team identification is preeminent) engage in more cheating behavior than do students who perceive a benevolent climate focused on broader organization or societal groups. Current and future foodservice managers’ perceptions about motivating employees to practice safe food handling were examined as a basis for developing recommendations to improve dietetics and hospitality educators’ pedagogy related to employee motivation. Perceptions about teaching and delivery methods also were explored. Four focus groups were conducted in Iowa and Kansas; two with future managers (students) and two with current managers. Five major themes emerged from the qualitative data analysis: communication, customization, operations, training methods/ materials, and human resources. Each motivator is discussed and suggestions are provided for enhancing teaching and learning in foodservice management programs.

The purpose of this paper was to examine the leadership practice scores and leadership behaviors of students before and after an event management course. A mixed methods approach was utilized. The Student- Leadership Practice Inventory (S-LPI) was administered to a sample of 184 students in three semesters of an event management course. Students completed the S-LPI at the beginning and at the end of the course. The students also wrote reflections of their leadership behaviors and learnings.

Competent computing skills are critical for successful business operations and the accountants who sustain them. Developing competent skills requires not only knowledgeable trainers but also facilities able to support and deliver instruction to accounting trainees in efficient ways. Technology-equipped training environments have long been espoused as essential environments needed to speed delivery and enhance the learning experience of trainees. This study examined the impact of training environment on knowledge and skill set development. Results suggest that there are limitations to the extent to which technology-equipped training environments influence learning.
