Training Reduces The Drawing Detriments Associated With Categorical Perception, Larissa F. Arnold

Previous research suggests that categorical perception may interfere with a novice artist’s ability to accurately draw simple shapes. Specifically, when asked to draw two shapes of slightly different sizes, participants tend to exaggerate the categorical difference between the two and draw the small shape too small. Similarly, participants tend to draw oblique angles more oblique than they should be when they are close to perpendicular or overlapping. In this dissertation, father participation in early childhood home visits was examined using observational data from 50 Maternal Infant Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) home visits where a father figure was present for a visit with a mother receiving services and a target child two years old or younger. The sample included 34 different home visitors. Videos were coded using the HVOF-R and HOVRS A+ observational tools. The purpose of this dissertation was to study the effect of testing mode (giving a test on computer versus paper) in authentic classroom environments. Specifically, this work sought to broaden the pedagogical implications of testing mode by examining variations between computer and paper mode in student test performance, cognitive load, and use of scratch paper. How To Engage European-American Participants In Racial Dialogue: The Role Of Dialogue Structure And Mixed Race Groups, Meredith Tittler

One effective strategy for combatting racism and promoting understanding across racial lines is group dialogue (e.g., Nagda, 2006). Previous research of racial dialogues has used a self-selecting participant pool of individuals who are motivated to participate in racial dialogues (e.g., Gurin, Nagda & Zuniga, 2013). Research up to this point has not investigated the portion of the population who do not willingly participate in racial dialogues. Previous research suggests that European-Americans may be a portion of the population especially avoidant of racial dialogues (e.g., Sue, 2013). Understanding the reasons European-Americans are avoidant of racial dialogues is an important prerequisite to creating interventions to increase participation. In the current study, I examined factors that affect European-American participants’ interest and willingness to participate in a racial dialogue. The specific factors are: facilitator structuring of the dialogue with ground rules (structured condition) vs. a facilitator who does no structuring beyond introducing the conversation topic (not-structured condition), as well as the effect of being in an inter-group dialogue (mixed race group) vs. an intra-group dialogue (all-European-American group). Participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions of a racial dialogue vignette varying across the two variables (structured vs. not-structured; inter-group vs. intra-group).

The main findings from this study include a significant interaction between the racial make-up of the dialogue group and the structure of the group on participants’ willingness to share their honest thoughts. The current study aims to research the relationship between smartphone use, symptoms of anxiety, symptoms of depression, and academic performance. Previous literature suggests that smartphone usage is related to mental health (Ha, Chin, Park, Ryu, and Yu, 2008; Rosen, Whaling, Rab, Carrier, and Cheever, 2013; Rosen, Whaling, Carrier, Cheever, & Rokkum, 2013; Van Ameringen, Mancini, & Farvolden, 2003). Studies have also linked mental health to academic performance in college students (Eisenberg, Golberstein, & Hunt, 2009; Hysenbegasi, Hass, & Rowland, 2005). Spoken language has no spaces between its words. Therefore, one of the major tasks facing listeners of any language is determining from the largely continuous stream of speech where the invisible word boundaries lie. Although English is not a language where the position of a word's stressed syllable is reliably fixed, its lexical stress is nevertheless fixed enough that L1 English listeners initially apply the heuristic that strong syllables mark the first syllable of a new word, attempting alternative resegmentations only when this heuristic fails to identify a viable word string (Cutler & Butterfield, 1992; Cutler & Carter, 1987). Six couples in their first marriage with at least one child age 18 or younger were interviewed to understand how their financial histories affect their current approach to financial management and how their financial management affects their relationships. Learning Transfer From The Business Communication Classroom To The Workplace, Danica L. Schieber

This dissertation is a longitudinal study, following business majors from a business communication class to their new workplaces to see if they are able to transfer learning from one context to the next. While many studies have analyzed possible instances of transfer, few studies have followed students from the classroom to the workplace, and very few have specifically worked with the population of business majors. This study analyzed participants’ writing and reflective work using a case study qualitative methodology, informed by Grounded Theory, Legitimate Peripheral Participation, and Activity Theory.
