Eye Tracking Student Strategies For Solving Stoichiometry Problems Involving Particulate Nature Of Matter Diagrams, John Y. Baluyut, Thomas A. Holme

This study compared how students obtained and used information from particulate nature of matter (PNOM) diagrams as well as balanced chemical equations when asked questions about stoichiometry concepts such as limiting and excess reagents, and yield. The comparisons were made in terms of visual behaviors by examining eye fixations while students responded to a 30-item online instrument. Statistically significant differences were found between visual behaviors of high- and low-performers on seven items, mostly those that dealt with correctly identifying the limiting reagent for each diagram. Educational campaigns are more complicated when members of our audiences hold scientific misconceptions related to new technologies. Our prairie strips research and education team produced a brief, focused video aimed to dispel a misconception related to the effect of prairie strip plants' roots on agricultural drain tiles in the Midwest. Our "Field Tile Investigation" video was based on the conceptual change framework from science education and featured a discrepant event. The goal was to move farmers, landowners, and their advisors to an understanding of prairie strips that was more compatible with the scientific standard.

An Analysis Of Classroom Collusion Using Latent Dirichlet Allocation, Charles B. Shrader, Sue P. Ravenscroft, Jeffrey Kaufmann

In this study, we use Latent Dirichlet Allocation to explore the reflections of students who faced a demanding classroom challenge, to which some responded by colluding. Our five-topic LDA solution describes the cheating event in terms of the nature of the course assignment itself, teams as a resource and support mechanism, the repercussions of cheating, and differences between majors or course tracks. The most relevant topics were the differences between the tracks and the repercussions of cheating. Teams and teammates also play a large role in the students’ reflections. We conclude with the implications of these topics in future research.

Students are most likely to leave science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors during their first year of college. We developed an analytic approach using random forests to identify at-risk students. This method is deployable midway through the first semester and accounts for academic preparation, early engagement in university life, and performance on midterm exams. By accounting for cognitive and noncognitive factors, our method achieves stronger predictive performance than would be possible using cognitive or noncognitive factors alone. The ACS Examinations Institute has been developing Anchoring Concepts Content Maps to provide an organizational template for the four-year undergraduate chemistry curriculum. In order to accomplish this goal, specific subdisciplinary versions of the map share the two top levels but distinguish themselves at the bottom two levels which contain finer-grained content details. This structure has been refined and vetted over a number of meetings and workshops. This paper presents the four levels of the content map for physical chemistry.

The research literature on L2 writing processes contains a multitude of insights that could inform writing instruction, but writing teachers are constrained in their capacity to make use of these insights insofar as they lack detailed information about how their students’ actually engage in the processes of writing. Despite the interest in modeling and the importance of social justice, there has not been much attention to connecting modeling with social justice. To fill this gap, we developed criteria for mathematical modeling problems that embrace the characteristics of problems and social justice through three phases: literature analysis, thematic categories, and piloting. The criteria will help teacher educators when selecting modeling problems to be used in teacher preparation programs and assessing the modeling problems posed by PSTs.

Despite the importance of teachers’ conception of mathematical modeling, limited attention is given to this area in the current literature. In this study we examined 78 preservice teachers’ (PSTs) views of mathematical modeling and how their conceptions are reflected in their performance of mathematical modeling problems. Analyses of survey responses revealed that our PSTs seem to develop narrow views of mathematical modeling. In addition, although a large portion of PSTs mistook mathematical modeling with mathematical models or with traditional word problems, we found a positive association between PSTs’ conceptions of mathematical modeling and their mathematical modeling abilities.

As one approach to moving beyond transmitting “inert” ideas to chemistry students, we use the term “teaching from rich contexts” to describe implementations of case studies or context-based learning based on systems thinking that provide deep and rich opportunities for learning crosscutting concepts through contexts. This approach nurtures the use of higher-order cognitive skills to connect concepts and apply the knowledge gained to new contexts. Specifically, this work sought to broaden the pedagogical implications of testing mode by examining variations between computer and paper mode in student test performance, cognitive load, and use of scratch paper. When it comes to trauma analysis, there are multiple databases and criteria used to determine weapons. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to determine whether or not the accuracy of these databases are precise enough to definitively determine which type of weapon is used. This study investigates how preservice teachers (PST) help English language learners (ELLs) understand cognitive demanding mathematical problems using complicated language use. Three mathematics PSTs worked with ELLs in one-on-one settings while receiving individual interventions. The strategies they implemented were analyzed based on four categories: mathematical content, culture/life experience, mathematical/cognitive process, and mathematical/contextual language. In this paper we describe student use of a series of connected online problem-solving activities to remediate atmospheric carbon budget misconceptions held by undergraduate university students. In particular, activities were designed to address a common misconception about conservation of mass when students assume a simplistic, direct relationship between atmospheric CO2 concentrations and carbon emissions.
