Intercollegiate athletic programs are provided for student athletes to supplement their education. These extracurricular opportunities are thought to be very important in developing a well-rounded individual. Athletics expose student athletes to competition, team work, goal setting, and other experiences that contribute to being successful in later life (NCAA, 1992). Logically, it seems apparent that these opportunities should be provided equally to men and women participating in intercollegiate athletics since the resulting benefits of athletic participation should be gender neutral. This study was designed to compare learning problem-solving methods versus non problem-solving activity (word-processing) on subsequent learning to program in the BASIC language. It also examined a method to provide students with increased knowledge and skills to enable them to learn how to program;A pretest-posttest control group design was used in this experiment with random assignment of subjects to one of three groups. This study sought to determine the effectiveness of key components of the Science Bound programs in helping minority students qualify for entry into technical fields;The Science Bound program is a cooperative effort with the Des Moines Public School and Iowa State University. Science Bound students are at-risk Des Moines minority students.
