Toward A Theory Of Engineering Professorial Intentions: The Role Of Research Group Experiences, Brian A. Burt

This article advances the Theoretical Model of Engineering Professorial Intentions to explain why individuals do or do not choose to pursue faculty careers. A 13-month ethnographic study of members of a diverse chemical engineering research group was conducted. The resulting theoretical model accounts for six emergent components that contribute to members’ identification with faculty careers: (1) social identities and personal factors; (2) sociocultural factors; (3) participation, interactions, and learning in research group experiences; (4) faculty prototype; (5) social comparisons; and (6) individual and institutional experiences. Black men, underrepresented in engineering, constitute a missing segment of the population who could contribute to the global knowledge economy. To address this national concern, stakeholders need additional research on strategies that aid in Black men’s persistence. This study explores the experiences of 30 Black men in engineering graduate programs. Three factors are identified as helping them persist from year to year, and in many cases through completion of the doctorate: the role of family, spirituality and faith-based community, and undergraduate mentors. Students are most likely to leave science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors during their first year of college. We developed an analytic approach using random forests to identify at-risk students. This method is deployable midway through the first semester and accounts for academic preparation, early engagement in university life, and performance on midterm exams. By accounting for cognitive and noncognitive factors, our method achieves stronger predictive performance than would be possible using cognitive or noncognitive factors alone. Answering questions before a learning episode—“prequestions”—can enhance memory for that information. A number of studies have explored this effect in the laboratory; however, few studies have examined prequestions in a classroom setting. In the current study, the effects of prequestions were examined in an undergraduate course in chemical engineering. The purpose of this study was to understand the how’s, why’s, and what’s behind students’ motivational orientation in a first-year engineering technology course, following a mechatronic project. To accomplish this, we implemented an eight-week treatment that required 61 students to design and integrate a software program to control an electro-mechanical robotic system. This article examines the relationship of team behaviors as antecedents to successful team performance and learning during adaptive instruction guided by Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs). This proposal describes the FLEx (Forward Learning Experience) program, a mobile learning environment in a 16-foot trailer designed to deliver advanced technology outreach to students around the state of Iowa. A joint effort of Iowa State University’s College of Design, College of Engineering, and Extension and Outreach, the FLEx has engaged 35,000 K-12 students, educators, and families in 171 events since the fall of 2014.

Gaining insight into the unique characteristics of participants during user research is a valuable tool for both recruitment and understanding differences within the target population. This work describes an agricultural harvest knowledge survey that was created for user research studies that observed experienced combine operators driving a combine simulator in virtual crop fields. The underrepresentation of Black men in engineering highlights a missing segment of the population who could contribute to the knowledge economy.1 An increase in Black men in engineering could lead to an increase in Black faculty members - and in general, role models - who cold teach and inspire future generations of students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Historical data from multiple institutions show that students who achieve a first-semester grade point average (GPA) below 2.0 are at substantially greater risk of leaving engineering programs before graduating with a degree than are those who achieved above 2.0. Identifying these ‘‘at risk’’ students prior to the start of their first semester could enable improved strategies to enhance their academic success and likelihood of graduation. This study used two distinct modeling approaches to predict first-term GPA group (low-risk: GPA > 2.0; at-risk: GPA < 2.0) based upon data available prior to the student’s first pre-enrollment advising session. In the case of one of the approaches—which allowed a differential weighting of Type I to Type II errors—we explore how these weightings influences the prediction accuracy. The models used academic and demographic data for first-year engineering students from 2010 to 2012 from a single large public research-active institution. The two model types employed to build predictive models were (1) ordinary least squares multiple linear regression (MLR), and (2) classification and regression trees (CART). For both MLR and CART models, high school GPA and math placement exam scores were found to be significant predictors of first-term GPA. Increasing the cost of missing at-risk students in the CART models improves at-risk prediction accuracy but also increases the rate of false positives (incorrectly identifying a low-risk student as at-risk). The relative simplicity of the CART models, as well as the ease with which error-types can be weighted to reflect institutional values, encourages their use in this type of modeling effort.

Unknown to each other two groups of engineers and engineering educators began to consider aspects of philosophy and engineering. One held a workshop of engineers and philosophers- “Engineering meets Philosophy” at Delft University and the other held a special session at the annual Frontiers in Education Conference on engineering education and philosophy. Since then the former has held a biannual workshop that have resulted in two impressive publications. The other continued its discussions through FIE and ASEE conferences. There are now regular sessions on philosophy and engineering education at the annual FIE conferences.

This study presents a unique synthesized set of data for community college students entering the university with the intention of earning a degree in engineering. Several cohorts of longitudinal data were combined with transcript-level data from both the community college and the university to measure graduation rates in engineering. The emphasis of the study is to determine academic variables that had significant correlations with graduation in engineering, and levels of these academic variables.
