Despite the obstacles to traditional distance education courses, distance education and social learning theorists suggest effective distance education courses can be developed. For this study, we designed a new distance education course model and attempted to 1) Test the effectiveness of the virtual education center model, understood through the lens of social learning and distance education theories; 2) Discuss potential improvements to the model; and 3) Build upon distance education and social learning theories. Student-centered, learning-based educational systems place demands on institutions to provide evidence that students have achieved competency in defined program outcomes. Experiential learning environments provide a platform for students to demonstrate competency of program learning outcomes. Key actions that provide quantitative measures to assess competency of learning outcomes ensure the ability to assess changes in learning outcome competencies. Decision making-based methodology was proposed for evaluating program outcomes. The methodology was tested to measure the effect of safety enhancing curriculum on Safety Awareness, one of the 15 competencies ABE is using in program outcome evaluations. The results indicated a significant increase in safety awareness and shift in cognitive processes following implementation of the curriculum. Since ABE measures competencies via supervisory evaluation of graduates, the authors examine the opportunity of developing a longitudinal study for measuring the magnitude of impact of curriculum on outcomes at the workplace.

In 2007, a USDA Higher Education Challenge Grant funded the creation of a Virtual Education Center (VEC) for Biorenewable Resources at three partner land grant institutions. Three new courses are taught through the VEC, each using multiple instructors and exchanges of video lectures between sites. The most heavily subscribed of these is a graduate survey course entitled Fundamentals of Biorenewable Resources. All first-year engineering students at the University of Tennessee take a common sequence of two-4 hour Physics for Engineers classes. The classes cover typical introduction to engineering topics, as well as basic physics concepts. The classes are divided into modules, with each module lasting approximately three weeks. There is a 50-minute test at the end of each module, which is worth 11% of the student’s grade.

This paper describes the development of two inquiry-based experiments in a mechanical engineering curriculum at a land grant research-intensive university, aimed at providing students with the opportunity to design and perform experiments. One experiment in engineering measurements (system behavior) and one experiment in fluid dynamics were developed. In each case, students working on teams were posed with a scenario and question to answer. Ground troop training within the Army typically involves three kinds of training: live mission rehearsal, virtual or simulated training exercises (e.g., within a Humvee simulator), and constructive training, in which warfighters battle artificially intelligent enemies in a video game format. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand and illuminate the experiences and stories of Midwestern Community College transfer students who entered and left engineering at a large Midwestern research university. Participants were invited based the following selection criteria: (1) Midwestern Community College transfer students who enter engineering; (2) completion of Calculus I and II, Physics, Chemistry, English I and II prior to transferring; (3) stayed in engineering at least 2 semesters; and (4) left engineering in the Fall 2010, Spring 2011, or Fall 2011 semesters for another major.

ABSTRACT

The goal of this dissertation is to collect and analyze data to determine success strategies for community college (CC) transfers to engineering. It does so by analyzing transcript level data collected longitudinally over a 10-year period as community college transfer students' progress before and after transfer into an engineering program. Characteristics of successful students are identified in terms of the academic and social integration variables using descriptive and inferential statistics. In addition to providing data analysis, the results determine distinctive strategies to increase the success of community college transfers in engineering.
