Measurement and instrumentation is a common course topic in many undergraduate mechanical engineering curricula. This paper summarizes changes to ME 370 – Engineering Measurements and Instrumentation at Iowa State University (ISU), which went through major course revisions from fall 2003 to spring 2005. Electromagnetic noise (interference) is always present in a measurement system. The desire to minimize noise in your signal of interest can only be accomplished after the noise is properly identified. This paper summarizes a mechanical engineering undergraduate laboratory activity developed for ME 370 – Engineering Measurements and Instrumentation at Iowa State University. The goals of this activity are to (i) develop an understanding of how analog noise enters a measurement system and (ii) investigate several noise reduction methods. Effectively communicating agricultural safety messages to children requires an understanding of this audience's unique characteristics, which are dependent upon their developmental stages. This article identifies important characteristics for the 4-7 and 8-12 age groups that were used in developing educational resources for children who participate in farm safety day camps and in-school programs. Each age group has specific characteristics that can inhibit communication when they are not considered in designing content and approach of educational materials. In addition, there are three comprehensive communication issues that affect the effectiveness of transferring safety messages to children.

Communication Practices of Women in Undergraduate Engineering Classes explores ways in which women and men communicate in undergraduate engineering classes and ways to better attract and retain women in engineering programs. The data, gathered over three semesters, include classroom observations, surveys, and interviews. Seven classes were analyzed: four in engineering, two in history, and one in food science. The Toying With TechnologySM program (TWT) has been offered to preservice elementary and secondary teachers for ten years. This program is designed to explain the principles behind many of the technological innovations in wide use today. This is accomplished through hands-on laboratory experiences. This includes, but is not limited to, experiences with programming, global positioning systems, and biomedical engineering. This program uses engineering as a basis to teach math, science, technology and problem solving concepts.
