In 1993, the State of Massachusetts enacted the Educational Reform Act to improve student performance and to increase school accountability. One of the curriculum frameworks of this initiative is titled Science and Technology/Engineering. One of the strands within that framework, Technology/Engineering, outlines standards in seven curriculum areas to be assessed at the high school level on the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS). The purpose of this study was to analyze the quality of the National Association of Industrial Technology (NAIT) certification examination quality control section, which contains forty items, using the methodologies of classical test theory (CTT) and item response theory (IRT). The ultimate goal of this research project is to evaluate the quality control portion of the NAIT certification exam by looking at the questions or items for errors. Building on a successful high school internship program started by a National Science Foundation grant in 1997, an internship program has been offered the past two years that provides students opportunities to join university research teams and investigate industrial work environments. The interns develop complete lesson plans targeted at a 5 th – 8th grade audience that are based on the university research and industrial sponsor’s work. These lesson plans are placed on a web site for dissemination. The interns have visited the industrial sponsor to learn about their business and done final project presentations for them.
