This paper will describe a synopsis of the development and application of a survey instrument to assess team skills and professional development outcomes of Team-Based Learning (TBL) in a human factors course. TBL is an advancing teaching pedagogy that shifts instruction from a traditional lecture-based teaching paradigm to a structured learning sequence that includes individual student preparation outside of class followed by active, in-class problem solving exercises completed by student learning teams. This work lays the foundation for creating gender neutral web design guidelines by determining the following: the gendering of web design element examples (including whether some examples are distinctly masculine or feminine), the perceived professionalism of design elements, and whether there is an interaction between gender and professionalism. Designing for a particular gender is common in both product and web design, but in many situations is exclusionary. Gaining insight into the unique characteristics of participants during user research is a valuable tool for both recruitment and understanding differences within the target population. This work describes an agricultural harvest knowledge survey that was created for user research studies that observed experienced combine operators driving a combine simulator in virtual crop fields. Two variations of the survey were designed, utilized, and evaluated in two separate studies. This paper describes the unexpected challenges of team tutor development such as the task and logistics. Previously, a research team from Iowa State University (ISU) working with the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) developed the reconnaissance (Recon) task for simple team tutoring with the Generalized Intelligent Framework for Tutoring (GIFT) (Bonner et al., 2015; Gilbert et al., 2015). Unlike text-based input to an intelligent tutoring system, a diagram is perceived as a whole state; the operation sequence is less important. Traditional step-wise coaching is not as appropriate in diagram-based intelligent tutoring systems (DITS). From two previous tutoring systems, StaticsTutor and Thermo Cycle Tutor, we propose cross-domain pedagogical guidelines for DITS. In particular, instruction needs to be mapped to a hierarchical understanding of the diagram, where each level focuses on different characteristics of the drawing. Ground troop training within the Army typically involves three kinds of training: live mission rehearsal, virtual or simulated training exercises (e.g., within a Humvee simulator), and constructive training, in which warfighters battle artificially intelligent enemies in a video game format.
