Meaningful Application Of The Australian Professional Standards For Teachers: The Role Of The University Appointed Supervisor, Madlen Griffiths, Mandie B. Shean, Denise Jackson

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

: Preservice teachers undertake mandatory professional experience as part of their journey towards classroom readiness and in-service teaching. Supporting them in this process are supervisors who both guide and assess these novices. Central to this assessment are the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, which need to be rigorously applied to ensure quality teaching graduates. This article investigates the application of these Standards by the supervisors in both their formative and summative assessment. Data are derived from interviews with final year preservice teachers and supervisors in a primary teaching degree course at one Western Australian university. Findings suggest that there is …

Supervision In Initial Teacher Education: A Scoping Review, Madlen Griffiths, Mandie Shean, Denise Jackson

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Supervision in initial teacher education is a pivotal component of professional experience, widely considered to be the most valued aspect of preservice teacher learning. Key to these experiences is the work of the university appointed supervisors who mentor the novices during their in-classroom learning. This is a dichotomous and often under-rated role, fraught with challenges, yet remains under-theorised and underresearched. Situated in a framework of readiness for teaching, this literature review provides a synopsis of the challenges facing the provision of quality teacher education programs and the supervision of preservice teachers and details the myriad of tasks undertaken by these …

Inside The Mentors’ Experience: Using Poetic Representation To Examine The Tensions Of Mentoring Pre-Service Teachers., Sharon L. Mcdonough

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The supervision and mentoring of pre-service teachers during professional experience is complex work that requires a range of skills and capacities. Professional development for this work has traditionally been limited, however, and mentor teachers report experiencing tensions in their work stemming from their roles as both supporter and assessor of pre-service teachers. Despite the central role that mentors play in professional experience, their voices are underrepresented in the literature. In this paper, I draw on interview data to examine teachers’ experiences as mentors and the tensions they experience. I use poetic representation to illuminate the tensions and emotions of …

The Requirement To Be Fit And Proper: What Does It Mean To Australian Psychologists?, Francesca A. Bell Jan 2015

The Requirement To Be Fit And Proper: What Does It Mean To Australian Psychologists?, Francesca A. Bell

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The phrase fit and proper is used in the Health Practitioners Regulation National Law Act (Qld), 2009, which came into effect nationally in 2010 and governs psychologists. As with previous legislation that used the phrase, the legislator does not define fit and proper, leaving it up to each profession to determine its exact meaning and inform the courts accordingly. A review of the literature established that to date no Australian psychologist has attempted to define the construct. This means that Australian lawyers do not get any guidance from psychologists regarding how they should interpret the phrase fit and proper in …

Dictating Or Facilitating: The Supervisory Process For Language Teachers, M. Naci Kayaoglu

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This study is an attempt to explore the supervisory process from the standpoint of supervised English language teachers. The research which has been going on for three years, aims to weigh the results in terms of teachers to be benefited from the supervision. More specifically, the research answers whether teachers are really helped in improving their teaching and finding solutions to the problems as part of in-service training. In support for diary reports taken from teachers, the questionnaire which involved 72 items about supervisory process reveal that supervision appears to fail to live up to EFL teachers’ expectations with the …

Teaching Practice, Supervision, Advice And Assessment : A Report Of An Investigation Undertaken Under The Auspices Of The Research Committee Of Nedlands College, M. Kaplan

Research outputs pre 2011

An opinion questionnaire (see Appendix One for details) was distributed to staff of the Departments of Education Studies and English Studies to identify expectations of staff in relation to teaching practice and to measure the extent to which staff views on the subject coincide. Use was made of the Delphi technique to enable respondents to modify and expand on the original questionnaire and to revise their initial responses in the light of additional information. It was felt that the Delphi technique would permit more detailed and reflective views to be obtained from staff and that this additional information would justify …
