The focus of this study is the impact of student perception of the validity of content on student learning. It is proposed that, if the content of a subject is perceived by students as being different to the content of another subject, a result of this perceived difference is that students will treat their learning in these subjects differently. To test this proposal, student beliefs about items from the content of the religious education course are compared with student responses to items of content of their science course. Remedial EngIish education has long focused on the development of students reading and writing skills, but research suggests that greater emphasis may need to be placed on affective factors such as self-esteem, motivation, attitude and perception. The influence of such 'non-cognitive' factors on any adolescent student's literacy development is often underestimated. For students experiencing difficulties in literacy, the interaction between perceived ability of degree of success in literacy and the affective factors often impact negatively on self-esteem, attitude and motivation. It is difficult to overstate the depth of the educational disadvantage which continues to be experienced by Aboriginal young people in the Swan District. While encouraging signs can be found in the genuinely positive attitudes towards school among many of the Aboriginal students who are regular attenders, it is still the case that considerable differences in educational outcomes between Aborigines and non-Aborigines remain.

For example:

• Only one of the students interviewed was found to be undertaking a full Tertiary Entrance Examination course in the district during the Year 2000.

Over the past decade there have been dramatic and unprecedented changes in post compulsory education, with an increase of over 40% for year 12 retention rates to 76.6% in 1992 and huge expansion of year 11 and 12 vocational education and training programs. However, for Aboriginal past compulsory age students, the picture is very different. In 1993 the year 12 Aboriginal retention rate was only 24.48% or 982 students (Australia wide), and by 1996 only 10% of the indigenous 15 and older population had any post school qualification, compared to 35% of the total population. The three volumes which make up this study describe in detail how a number of teachers in different school situations in different parts of Australia undertook the assessment of young children's development of English as a second language. Most of the teachers worked in pre-primary to Year 3 classrooms where the majority of the children were aged between five and eight years. The majority worked in a mainstream context in which the number of children speaking English as a second language (ESL) varied from more than half the class to two or three students. A survey of the 49 youth work students who graduated from the Edith Cowan University in the years 1986 to 1988 was undertaken. Information was sought on the occupational destinations of graduates including the time taken to obtain a first appointment, impediments experienced' in attempting to gain a position, and perceived barriers to future career prospects. The study found that most graduates were able to obtain employment in the youth affairs field. However, it is clear that life is not easy for many youth workers for reasons such as low salaries, adverse working conditions, lack of professional status, and uncertain …

The original intention of the contributors was to write a book about their experiences as teachers at Milingimbi in Arnhem Land. Initially, articles were obtained from only those people who had actually taught at Milingimbi. However, theory and practice have changed a great deal since the original articles were put together in 1978. Some of those articles became dated; others were repetitious; some were simply not good enough to be printed.

The composition of the student population in secondary schools in Western Australia has changed considerably in recent years. Moora town was established in 1875, when the railway from Midland Junction to Walkaway was built. There had always been Aborigines in the surrounding districts, and as land was taken up for farming, a number of them were employed as farmhands and domestics.

The town is the regional centre for the North Midlands, a subdivision of the Northern Agricultural Statistical Division of Western Australia. As such, it was developed to service the agricultural hinterland. Information was sought late in 1972 about problems encountered by teachers in schools with a fairly high proportion of Aboriginal children. For this purpose a questionnaire was designed to elicit information about the school situation, the surrounding community, enrolment, age and experience of the teaching staff and actual pedagogical problems encountered and methods of dealing with them. Another principle aim was to ascertain the extent to which the curiculum had been adapted to local situations and to determine what implications this might have for pre-service and in-service training.
