The fundamental question that this study set out to investigate was: Can the advantages of hypermedia be extended to curriculum materials that are for the sole use of teachers? To consider this question, three areas needed to be investigated: hypermedia (the medium); teachers (the target) and curriculum documents (the content). Hypermedia has a long history dating back to Bush (1986) who in 1945 imagined his Memex system as building information trails between ideas. This report documents the findings of a study on Dean Ashenden's proposal for radically restructuring schools. Dean Ashenden is a highly influential educationist in Australia. Over the past twenty years he has written and talked extensively on equality of educational opportunity, the nature of teachers work', and Award Restructuring; his counsel has been sought by key decision makers in education systems throughout the country; and in 1988 he was a facilitator on several occasions during negotiations between the W.A. Ministry of Education and the State School Teachers Union.

Prose Fiction Preferences Of Lower Secondary Urban Aboriginal Boys, Stephen James White

The purpose of this study was to investigate the prose fiction preferences of lower secondary urban Aboriginal boys. The Likert scale scores from the 2 x 4 factorial design were analysed using an ANOVA test of significance. It was found that the research group significantly preferred action genres to non-action genres, Aboriginal characterisations to white Australian characterisations, and contemporary story extracts to traditional story extracts.

A survey of the 49 youth work students who graduated from the Edith Cowan University in the years 1986 to 1988 was undertaken. Information was sought on the occupational destinations of graduates including the time taken to obtain a first appointment, impediments experienced' in attempting to gain a position, and perceived barriers to future career prospects. The study found that most graduates were able to obtain employment in the youth affairs field. However, it is clear that life is not easy for many youth workers for reasons such as low salaries, adverse working conditions, lack of professional status, and uncertain …

In 1987, the Ministry of Education released a report entitled 'Better Schools in Western Australia: A Program for Improvement'.l It outlined radical proposals to make schools more self-determining and accountable. Although much of the program has yet to be put into effect, the plan and steps taken to implement it caused a major upheaval not only to the system but also to people working in it. On the 9th June 1990, the Claremont Teachers College Alumni Association completed its first 10 years. From a fairly humble beginning the Association has continued to grow until it now has in excess of 250 members.

These first ten years have been most traumatic for the Claremont College. In 1982 the College lost its identity as a separate autonomous institution when it was amalgamated to become one of the campuses of the West Australian College of Advanced Education. In 1989 the campus closed its doors on its last teacher education graduates and ceased its role as a teacher education institution. …

This management plan (June 1990) sets out the place of research in the spectrum of activities of the College and the state-wide responsibilities of WACAE. The College has a positive, unambiguous attitude to the promotion of research of high quality and has allocated funds and resources to that end. The Home-School Support programme is part of Education Services. It operates in all metropolitan divisions as well as in three country regions. Education officers are resource persons for field officers who have statutory powers. The education officers, however, have no statutory powers. There are 9 Education Officers in the metropolitan regions. Only two divisions have full time officers in the programme. In 1988 the programme serviced 443 clients in the three metropolitan regions and education officers were consulted over a further 7 52 clients. This study examined the attitudes of regular school students towards their peers with special needs within a Western Australian primary school. Comparisons were made between the children In Years 1, 4 and 7 of a specific school to identify whether any significant variations in attitude were present between the different years. The problem of obtaining texts with material relevant to the core course in Aboriginal and Multicultural Education in the W.A. College led me to suggest a book of readings selected by those teaching the course. Obviously this was a trap for the unwary, for the diversity of recommendations that I received meant that unless the book was to be of mammoth proportions, some lecturers were bound to be disappointed. This was compounded by difficulties in tracking down authors to obtain their permission in time to publish.

The original intention of the contributors was to write a book about their experiences as teachers at Milingimbi in Arnhem Land. Initially, articles were obtained from only those people who had actually taught at Milingimbi. However, theory and practice have changed a great deal since the original articles were put together in 1978. Some of those articles became dated; others were repetitious; some were simply not good enough to be printed.
