Externalising Behaviour Problems And The Influence Of Classroom Environments In The Early School Years ; Student-Teacher Relationships And Teacher Discipline: Their Relation To The Externalising Behaviours Of Kindergarten To Year 1 Students, Emma Spencer

Theses : Honours

Some of the most influential people in a child's life are the teachers who aid them in their transition into the education system and the complex social environment that it brings (Blancher & Eisenhower, 2006). Children who display externalising behaviours early in childhood often experience greater difficulties than other children when entering school and throughout their education experience (Hinshaw, Lahey & Hart, 1993; Liu, 2004). The student-teacher relationship established within the classroom and the disciplinary measures utilized by the teachers can have a profound impact on the child's development both academically and socially (Galen & Underwood, 1997; Hamre & Pianta, …

Contextual Effects On A Well Learned Task: Isolated Or Broad?, Matthew J. Parkinson Jan 2007

Contextual Effects On A Well Learned Task: Isolated Or Broad?, Matthew J. Parkinson

Theses : Honours

Skill transfer is a fundamental feature in the domain of skill acquisition, however different theories present conflicting ideas regarding prediction of transfer. Anderson's (1982) Adaptive Control of Thought theory posits that the amount of transfer is proportional to the number of shared productions. Logan's (1988) Instance theory in contrast, posits that complete transfer will only occur on tasks which have been experienced before. However, work by Speelman and Kirsner (1997), Speelman, Forbes and Giesen (2004) and Johnson (2005) have produced results that counter the implicit assumptions of these theories. More specifically a disruption from the predicted learning curve was found …

Academic Adjustment And Resilience In Mature Age And School Leaver University Students : A Review Of The Literature & Differences In Resilience And University Adjustment Between School Leaver And Mature Age University Students, Brent Munro

Theses : Honours

This paper reviews the literature related to the transition and adjustment of school leaver and mature age students to university. It is suggested that the transition to university is a major life transition and thus is a period of great stress (Larose, Bernier, & Tarabulsy, 2005). For mature age students and school leaver students, the impacts upon adjustment to university are varied during the transition to university study (Cantwell, Archer, & Bourke, 2001; Challis, 1976; Justice & Dornan, 2001). First this review defines who mature age and school leaver students are in the context of universities. Second, the resilience literature …

An Investigation Into The Effectiveness Of Paired Reading With The Incorporation Of Additional Error Corrective Procedures, Kathryn Schneider Jan 2007

An Investigation Into The Effectiveness Of Paired Reading With The Incorporation Of Additional Error Corrective Procedures, Kathryn Schneider

Theses : Honours

The aim of this literature review was to examine the effectiveness of the Paired Reading (PR) intervention, a one-to-one instruction approach to improving children's fluency, accuracy, and comprehension. The effectiveness of PR in promoting a positive attitude towards reading and in increasing children's sense of self-efficacy in reading was also investigated, focusing principally on children whose level of reading was below what was expected for their chronological age. It addressed the question of how well the intervention can be implemented by parents and explored the strategies used in PR to elucidate what aspects of the intervention may contribute to its …

The Personal Development Of Those Who Teach It, Dean Goldspink Jan 2007

The Personal Development Of Those Who Teach It, Dean Goldspink

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study sought to discover what primary and secondary Health and Physical Education teachers knew about personal development. Specifically, whether these teachers actively pursued their own personal development and whether they conceived of the Health and Physical Education learning area as a personal development curriculum. Further, the teachers were asked if they saw a relationship between teaching a personal development curriculum and their own pursuit of it through a process of proactive life management. A descriptive-objective research design was confirmed as a suitable approach to provide a detailed description of the personal development of Health and Physical Education teachers.

Comparing The Performance And Satisfaction Of Face-To-Face And Virtual Teams In A Learning Enviroment, Ying-Chieh A. Liu Jan 2007

Comparing The Performance And Satisfaction Of Face-To-Face And Virtual Teams In A Learning Enviroment, Ying-Chieh A. Liu

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The main purpose of this study is to find whether virtual teams perform as effectively as face-to-face teams and if not, whether solutions can be derived to improve the levels of performance. To this end, the study compares the performance and satisfaction perception levels of virtual teams with face-to-face teams in a learning environment. In order to develop a sound framework for the research, a detailed literature review of prior research encompassing team satisfaction and performance in face-to-face and CMC (Computer Mediated Communication) supported environments was undertaken. Additionally the researcher performed a meta-analysis of previous research studies and from these …

Visual Dysfunction : A Contributing Factor In Memory Deficits, And Therefore Learning Difficulties?, Elizabeth G. Bennett Jan 2007

Visual Dysfunction : A Contributing Factor In Memory Deficits, And Therefore Learning Difficulties?, Elizabeth G. Bennett

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis is based on Educational Therapy (ET) practice which has found eye muscle imbalance is a key factor to be addressed in management of learning difficulties (LD). This level of oculo-motor (o-m) function is a 'hidden' handicap as individuals are unaware of the problem; it is not routinely tested; and is not generally included in learning difficulties research. O-m function is omitted in standard paediatric optometry tests, and in school vision screening. Eye exercises increase the range of binocular fields of vision by employing stereopsis glasses and red/green slides. Central vision loss was uncovered when students reported words, seen …

Cultural Acclimatisation: Foreign Students Studying In A Private Educational Institution In Singapore, Chor Khoon Chey

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This Portfolio aims to examine the problems of acclimatisation and coping strategies of such foreign students. A sample of tweleve students was chosen from Chinese students studying at one private educational institution in Singapore. Drawing on the findings of Furnham (1997) and Murphy-Lejenne (2002), among others, the present study looks at the reasons why the participants decided to travel overseas, why they chose Singapore as their destination, what problems they encountered while here, and how they coped with the problems. They were also asked what specific problems they encountered with the schools they enrolled in. It is the contention of …

The Introduction Of Recurrent Funding To Non-Government Schools In Western Australia : National Statesmanship Or Provincial Pragmatism?, Heather De Leuil Jan 2007

The Introduction Of Recurrent Funding To Non-Government Schools In Western Australia : National Statesmanship Or Provincial Pragmatism?, Heather De Leuil

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

State aid to private schools has been a controversial issue in Australia since the beginning of European settlement. This was true in all colonies' and remains a national issue in the twenty-first century. At various times colonial governments chose to provide to private schools, principally those operated by the Catholic and major churches. However as the colonies grew and statehood loomed, the of the day sought to withdraw their aid from private schools and their funding on the growing non-denominational, public school systems.

Teachers Experiences With Teaching Children With Learning Difficulties: A Qualitative Study, Aleesha Morton Jan 2007

Teachers Experiences With Teaching Children With Learning Difficulties: A Qualitative Study, Aleesha Morton

Theses : Honours

It is estimated that 16% of Australian primary school students suffer from a learning difficulty (LD) (Rivalland, 2000). Teachers are expected to provide these students with the specialised education they need. However, teachers have reported that they face numerous challenges to provide LD students with the support needed, which may result in them experiencing high levels of stress and anxiety. These challenges include problems with identification of the specific difficulty and the most appropriate intervention programs to implement, a lack of pre service education and training, insufficient resources and funding specific to students with LD. Awareness and understanding of these …

Cultivating The Civic Scientist: Science Communication & Tertiary Biotechnology Education, Joanne Edmondston Jan 2007

Cultivating The Civic Scientist: Science Communication & Tertiary Biotechnology Education, Joanne Edmondston

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Biotechnology is one of the most rapidly growing industries of the 21st Century and governments worldwide have invested significant funds to support research and development in this area. The belief that the commercialisation of biotechnology will offer significant social and economic benefits to the communities investing in this industry, however, is not a universally accepted view. Surveys of attitudes towards biotechnology in a number of countries have indicated that there are widespread concerns about the risks presented by the industry and the application of biotechnology products (Smith, 2001). These public concerns have resulted in a stronger focus being placed on …

Self-Concept And Attraction To Physical Activity: The Effectiveness Of An Intervention Programme To Enhance Children's Level Of Physical Activity, Barbara M. Howard Jan 2007

Self-Concept And Attraction To Physical Activity: The Effectiveness Of An Intervention Programme To Enhance Children's Level Of Physical Activity, Barbara M. Howard

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

According to motivational theory physical self-perceptions are crucial to the intrinsic desire to engage in physical activity through play, games, and sport. While there has been prolific research with middle primary and older children little is known of the importance of young children's physical self-concept and their motivation to engage in physical activity. This study had three major purposes. Firstly it aimed to examine the relationship between children's self-concept, their attraction to physical activity, and level of physical activity. The second purpose of the study was to examine differences between boys' and girls' self-concept, attraction to physical activity and level …

Learning The Documentary Lesson: Theory And Practice In English, Stuart M. Bender Jan 2007

Learning The Documentary Lesson: Theory And Practice In English, Stuart M. Bender

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This research investigates the problem of teaching documentary texts in the secondary English classroom in Western Australia. Historical studies of the subject indicate that it serves three functions; ethical training, aesthetic cultivation and rhetorical training. Previous research from the governmental perspective has investigated the problems associated with Literary texts, popular television drama and personal-response essay writing; it emerges that these familiar pedagogical activities are deployed in classrooms to function as opportunities to engage students in ethical training, often at the expense of the latter two functions. This research project is a post-positivist theoretical discussion supplemented by qualitative data in the …
