Leveraging Apple Remote Desktop To Facilitate Classroom Critiques Of Digital Projects, Jerry C. Schnepp

Classroom critiquing of visual projects is an essential exercise to help students refine their work. Usually, instructors display student work on a large screen so that the class can offer comments and suggestions. However, problems arise because critiques are often mired by ambiguous or misunderstood language. Sometimes students are better shown than told. This presentation demonstrates how Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) can be used to project the display of any lab computer while the instructor and student share control. The student’s work can be interactively modified during a critique session, resulting in an engaging experience for the entire class.

“I Had Never Really Made Sense Of That Before”: Constructing Mathematical Content Knowledge And Teaching Through Story Telling, Sara Mccormick Davis, Gabriel T. Matney

How do teacher educators in two different fields help pre-service teachers bridge content and pedagogical knowledge? This paper explores the experience of using story-telling over two courses that are required in an early childhood teacher education program. The authors, from two different colleges, used reflection prompted by story-telling to collaboratively support the construction of content knowledge in both a math content class and in a math methods class. Students were able to reflect on their own math content knowledge by telling and retelling their understanding of math knowledge construction and that of children they worked with over the semester.

Surfing Injuries Requiring First Aid In New Zealand, 2007-2012, Kevin Moran, Jonathon Webber

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

In an island nation such as New Zealand with easy access to surf beaches, surfing activities are very popular and, while generally perceived as a healthy form of outdoor recreation, they do have attendant risks. This study reports on nondrowning, surfing-related incidents that required medical first aid on beaches during five summer seasons from 2007-2012. Retrospective descriptive analysis of data from lifeguard first aid reports found that 16% (n = 1,327) of injuries were the consequence of surfing activity. Asynchronous online discussion environments are important platforms to support learning. Research suggests, however, threaded forums, one of the most popular asynchronous discussion environments, do not often foster productive online discussions naturally. This paper explores how certain properties of threaded forums have affected or constrained the quality of discussions, and argues that developing alternative discussion environments is highly needed to offer better support for asynchronous online communication. The purpose of the study was to understand student interaction and learning supported by a collaboratively social annotation tool — Diigo. The researcher examined through a case study how students participated and interacted when learning an online text with the social annotation tool — Diigo, and how they perceived their experience. The findings suggested that students participated actively in the collaborative learning activity and were engaged in a variety of behaviors including self-reflection, elaboration, internalization, and showing support. Classroom implementation of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) requires significant professional development that develops teachers’ understanding of the mathematics content and practice standards. This professional development must begin with the content and pedagogical needs of the teachers it serves. This study examined elementary and middle school teachers’ perceived mathematics content needs related to the CCSSM mathematics content domains, their perceived pedagogical needs, and the connection between these perceptions and statewide assessment data. The purpose of this study was to develop and improve a teaching model for Learning and Enjoying. The focus of this teaching model is to increase mathematics achievement, attitude towards mathematics, and mathematical communication skills. This paper presents our work in translating the Mathematics Teaching Efficacy Beliefs Instrument (MTEBI) from English to Thai and our resulting initial investigation with 262 Thai pre-service teachers. The MTEBI underwent confirmatory factor analysis indicating two independent scales of Personal Mathematics Teaching Efficacy and Mathematics Teaching Outcome Expectancy (Enochs, Smith, Huinker, 2000). The translation process occurred over several meetings between two US educators and one Thai educator. To check for reliability the instrument was translated into Thai and back translated into English.

There looms an uncertainty about the Common Core State Standards for mathematics for many teachers. Teachers have indicated that they want professional development (PD) focused on learning about the new standards (Bostic & Matney, in press). This manuscript describes PD programs for K-10 mathematics teachers and offers results from one activity aimed to help teachers unpack the Standards for Mathematical Practice (SFMP). Four major themes arose from interpretive analysis of teachers’ perceptions of the SFMP. The purpose of this paper is to report on the technical competency of volunteer surf lifeguards to perform CPR on a manikin in light of their lifeguard experience, age, and gender. The CPR skills of surf lifeguards on patrol at the beginning of the 2010-11 summer season were tested on manikins by observation of CPR procedures and electronic recording of compression and ventilation skills. Almost all lifeguards (n=252) made the appropriate initial checks for responsiveness (98%). Compression skills were generally performed accurately with few technical errors (such as incomplete release). Most lifeguards (87%) over-ventilated the lungs (> 600ml) on each …

Social annotation (SA) allows learners to highlight and comment on Web pages and share annotations with each other online. Despite its potential in promoting collaborative learning, examining how to integrate it into educational settings has not been fully studied. The purpose of the study is to examine student participation in three different SA-based online activities: (1) peer review, (2) annotated discussion, and (3) collaborative reading.
