An Examination Of Factors Associated With The Achievement Of Middle School African-American Males In Mathematics, Syllen Hill

This study examines factors that impact the achievement of middle school African-American males in mathematics on the Georgia Milestones Math End of Grade (EOG) test. Achievement in the middle school seventh and eighth grade math classroom, including, instructional strategies, peer affiliation, discipline, academic motivation, and school culture. Sixty students, 60 parents, and 8 teachers were survey participants in this quantitative study. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to explore middle school teachers’ pedagogy and their transformations as they implement one-to-one laptop instructional technology in their classroom environments. This study examines the relationship between school support, family support, community support, teen parenting programs and postsecondary education among teen mothers in North Carolina. The sample consisted of 212 participants who became teen mothers between the ages of 13-19 and have since attained postsecondary education. The variables used for the study included the following: school support, family support, community support, teen parenting programs, resilience, and mentoring. The purpose of this mixed-method study, combining a quantitative, quasi-experimental, and qualitative design was to examine a researcher-designed, piloted dropout intervention program that would address the factors that have contributed to African American, ninth-grade “at-risk” students. This study examines factors that affect student motivation and achievement in the middle school eighth grade science classroom, including, teacher-student relationships, student-peer relationships, teacher expectations in science, student preference of instructional delivery (labs vs. lecture), teacher demographics (experience at local school, professional experience, qualifications, age range), and student perceptions of teacher expectations in science. The purpose of this study was to examine 9th and 10th grade ELL students’ science class placement - sheltered ESL class or non-sheltered mainstream class - and determine if there was a difference in their levels of achievement based on placement. Unlike other academic courses, science incorporates its own terminology that can be difficult for even mainstream non-ELLs to understand. With the goal for English Language Learners to develop scientific proficiency, ELLs must gain an understanding of science substance and practice exploratory propensities for the brain.
