Factors Affecting Student Motivation And Achievement In Science In Selected Middle School Eighth Grade Classes, Naomi J. Bullock

This study examines factors that affect student motivation and achievement in the middle school eighth grade science classroom, including, teacher-student relationships, student-peer relationships, teacher expectations in science, student preference of instructional delivery (labs vs. lecture), teacher demographics (experience at local school, professional experience, qualifications, age range), and student perceptions of teacher expectations in science. One hundred fifty survey participants were used in this quantitative study which included an analysis of the independent variables affecting student motivation and academic achievement. The purpose of this experimental research was to examine the effects of the use of the TI-84 Plus Graphing Calculator on the achievement of Coordinate Algebra students to ascertain if the use of this tool promotes student achievement and increases the probability of students passing the Coordinate Algebra Milestones Assessment. Successful completion of Coordinate Algebra determines whether students receive a high school diploma and without a high school diploma students are ensuring themselves lives filled with low paying jobs, short-term employment, and a greater possibility of being incarcerated.

In Melissa Harris-Perry’s 2011 book, Sister Citizen, she references various psychological studies of altered judgment and decision making that can arise in irregularly shaped environments, and uses them to explicate the struggles women of color face at the intersection of race and gender stereotypes. These environments, or “crooked rooms,” represent an unlevel plane where misrecognition or lack of acknowledgment diminishes the contributions of women of color to the success of the nation.

The purpose of this study was to examine whether gender-based mathematics classes have a positive impact on the achievement levels of males and females. The study was conducted in order to give insight into the differentiated approach to teaching males and females separately and the effects the separate instruction has on mathematics achievement while closing the achievement gap.
