The Function Of Afrocentric Curricula In Higher Education: A Case Study Of Selected Hbcu Institutions, Kashawndros Jackson Dec 2017

The Function Of Afrocentric Curricula In Higher Education: A Case Study Of Selected Hbcu Institutions, Kashawndros Jackson

Electronic Theses & Dissertations Collection for Atlanta University & Clark Atlanta University

This study examines the role of Afrocentric curricula in higher education. Using four HBCU institutions (Dillard University, Hampton University, Howard University, and Spelman College) as a case study, the researcher selected the institutions on the basis of program quality and geographical spread. Program quality means the institutions must be accredited; geographical spread implies that the institutions must represent different parts of the country where HBCUs are concentrated. A mixed methods approach was used to analyze the data gathered from each institution’s course catalog during the 2011-2012 school year. The purpose was to determine if curricula dedicated to the black ...

Atlanta University Center Faculty Publications: A Selective Bibliography, Robert W. Woodruff Library

Atlanta University Center Faculty Scholarship Bibliographies

On February 28, 2006, the Robert W. Woodruff Library and the Library Advisory Council hosted an exhibit and reception to celebrate the scholarly publications of Atlanta University Center faculty. As a complement to that event, the Robert W. Woodruff Library developed the publication, Atlanta University Center Faculty Publications: A Brief Bibliography, which highlights selected scholarly and research contributions of the Atlanta University Center faculty.

The bibliography illustrates the richness of faculty contributions within each institution and across the Atlanta University Center community. The celebration has become an annual event and this compilation represents the next phase of a living document ...

College Athletic Reputation And College Choice Among African American High School Seniors: Evidence From The Educational Longitudinal Study, Jomills Henry Braddock Ii, Hua Lv, Marvin P. Dawkins Jul 2016

College Athletic Reputation And College Choice Among African American High School Seniors: Evidence From The Educational Longitudinal Study, Jomills Henry Braddock Ii, Hua Lv, Marvin P. Dawkins

Challenge

This study extends research on college choice, with recent national survey data, by examining what African American students say about the importance of college athletic reputation in choosing which school to attend. We use the Educational Longitudinal Survey to examine the overall distribution of self-reported factors that shape college choices among African American high school seniors who express plans to attend college immediately after high school. We then conduct factor analysis to examine the structure of relations among the diverse factors shaping student preferences and their contribution to understanding variation in the college choice process among African Americans. Finally, to ...

Black Males In The College Classroom: A Quantitative Analysis Of Student Athlete – Faculty Interactions, Eddie Comeaux Jul 2016

Black Males In The College Classroom: A Quantitative Analysis Of Student Athlete – Faculty Interactions, Eddie Comeaux

Challenge

Few scholars have examined the social and academic environmental influence on college student-athletes. This study explored the relationship between Black male student-athletes and faculty and the impact of specific forms of student athlete-faculty interaction on academic achievement. Data are drawn from the Cooperative Institutional Research Program’s 2000 Freshman Survey and 2004 Follow-Up Survey. The sample includes 739 Black football and basketball players attending predominantly White institutions. The findings provided evidence that the impact of the contact is to some extent contingent upon the specific nature of the interaction for Black male student-athletes. For example, faculty who provided encouragement for ...

The Role Of Black Colleges In The Development Of Mathematicians, Viveka O. Borum, Adriel Adon Hilton, Erica Walker

Spelman College Faculty Publications

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are home to almost 400,000 of the nation’s college and university population and account for nearly 25% of degrees conferred to African Americans, according to Hale (2006). They have been the launching pads for threefourths of African Americans who hold doctorate degrees, three-fourths of Black officers in the military, and four-fifths of African American federal judges (Hale, 2006). In addition, fifty percent of African American faculty in predominantly White research universities received their bachelor’s degrees at an HBCU (Hale, 2006). These are significant percentages given the relatively small number of Black ...

Virtual Graduate School Mentoring Using Embodied Conversational Agents, Kinnis Gosha, Juan E. Gilbert, Kamal Middlebrook Dec 2015

Virtual Graduate School Mentoring Using Embodied Conversational Agents, Kinnis Gosha, Juan E. Gilbert, Kamal Middlebrook

Morehouse Faculty Publications

It has been a major goal of the United States government to increase the participation of Americans in the fields of Science & Engineering (S&E), especially in under-represented groups. This research examines the use of an embodied conversational agent (ECA) as a virtual mentor to African American undergraduates who are interested in pursuing a graduate degree in computing. Mentoring advice was collected from a group of experts and programed within the ECA. A between-group, mixed method experiment was conducted with 37 African American male undergraduate computer science majors where one group used the ECA mentor while the other group pursued ...

Spelman College Faculty Publications

Computational algorithmic thinking (CAT) is the ability to design, implement, and assess the implementation of algorithms to solve a range of problems. It involves identifying and understanding a problem, articulating an algorithm or set of algorithms in the form of a solution to the problem, implementing that solution in such a way that it solves the problem, and evaluating the solution based on some set of criteria. CAT has roots in Mathematics, through problem solving and algorithmic thinking. CAT lies at the heart of Computer Science, which is defined as the study of algorithms. CAT embodies the ability to think ...
