Explaining Differences In Civic Knowledge: Multilevel Regression Analyses Of Student Data From 27 Countries, Wolfram Schulz
Civics and Citizenship Assessment
What explains the differences in student knowledge about Democracy, institutions and Citizenship and their skills in interpreting political communication? Does the amount of 'civic knowledge' depend mainly on the home environment, on the students' level of communication and activities in the area of politics, or does school make a difference in acquiring this knowledge? Which student-level and school-level factors do have an effect on cognitive abilities in this domain? The second lEA Civic Education Study provides data on 14-year-old students from 28 countries from Europe, North America, South America, Asia and the Pacific which can be used to study the …

Assessing Student Strengths: Academic Performance And Persistence Of First-Time College Students At A Private Church-Affiliated College, Jeffrey S. Williamson
Faculty Scholarship – School of Graduate and Continuing Studies
The research study sought to identify the significance or impact of strengths training received by first-time college students at a private, denominationally affiliated college that holds membership in the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) and to determine whether or not there were statistically significant differences in first semester outcomes between students who received formal feedback and training on their identified strengths and those who do not receive their strengths results or training.
First-time college students at Mount Vernon Nazarene College (MVNC) in Mount Vernon, Ohio completed the Gallup Strengths Finder (GSF) assessment as a part of the new …

The Effects Of Technology On Urban High School Students' Sense Of Classroom Community, Mervyn J. Wighting
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education
This study measured the sense of classroom community among students from two different grades in an independent urban high school (N = 181). A standardized instrument was used to compare sense of community in classes whose teachers used computers frequently and consistently in their instruction with others in which the teachers seldom or never included computer use in the classroom. Quantitative analysis revealed that there was a significant difference between the classes in terms of one of the sub-scales of the instrument; students whose teachers used computers frequently and consistently scored higher on the learning sub-scale of the sense …

A Study Of Professional Development School Program Graduates Through Their First Year As Urban School Teachers, Amy J. Vereen
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education
This year-long study focused on three first-year teachers-in order to examine how they adjusted to their first year, how they developed professionally, and how they changed as teachers. Each teacher possessed characteristics for success in urban schools, and had completed a Professional Development School internship.
Using a self-efficacy test, interviews, and a teacher survey, the three teachers were measured throughout the academic year with regard to their level of readiness to teach, the impact of their Professional Development School training on their work as teachers, self-efficacy, and willingness to continue teaching in an urban setting.
Regarding their level of readiness …

A Naturalistic Investigation Into The Processes And Themes Of Recovery From Chemical Dependency, Mark Thomas Blagen
A Naturalistic Investigation Into The Processes And Themes Of Recovery From Chemical Dependency, Mark Thomas Blagen
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education
The research on recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction has generally focused on the causes of relapse. Although the study of the causes of relapse is an important endeavor, the results of this focus remain inconclusive. Understanding the process and themes of recovery is also an important question that remains a significant challenge.
This study attempts to explain, in part, why it is that one person can have many relapse indicators and still thrive in recovery, while another who has multiple layers of support and opportunity for recovery, succumbs to addiction. This study also attempts to determine if and how …

Constructing And Using Educational Performance Indicators, Ken Rowe, Denise Lievesley
Student learning processes
Within the context of a growing international movement toward the adoption of ‘outcomes-based’ modes of educational provision and governance, this paper focuses on the context, nature, purpose and construction of educational performance indicators. Key issues related to types and sources of indicators, essential features of useful indicators, constructing and using performance indicators to advantage, and key elements of Education Management Information Systems (EMIS) are presented and discussed.

The Northeast Ohio Model Schools Institute (NOMSI) provided professional development for school-based leadership teams in standards-based mathematics and science teaching practices and leadership skills. Leadership teams from six local school districts were recruited to attend a two-week summer institute in August 2001, which focused on national standards, principles of effective professional development, an understanding of the conditions necessary for change. One or two faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences at each university also participated in the summer institute. Teams prepared a professional development plan for their school or district and received a mini-grant to implement their plan. Coaches—experts …
Arab American Youth In Perspective, Loukia K. Sarroub
Arab American Youth In Perspective, Loukia K. Sarroub
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
The September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States brought new attention to Muslim Arab American communities and highlighted how little we know about these communities, the Middle East, our own foreign policy, and national and local security. Although these issues are beyond the scope of our scholarly activities, many of us conduct research in schools that include Arab American students, or deal with issues of diversity in our work. Drawing on my experience as an educational anthropologist whose research centers on youth cultures and literacy studies, I provide in this column a brief overview of Arab immigration from the …

What Secondary English To Speakers Of Other Languages (Esol) Teachers Know About Social And Academic Language And Instructional Strategies For Limited English Proficient Students, Judy Chin
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine what secondary English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teachers understand about social and academic language, what instructional strategies they use for Limited English Proficient (LEP) students, and how these concepts are operationalized in their daily practice.
This was a mixed method study incorporating both quantitative and qualitative data collection and interpretation. Written questionnaires and individual interviews addressed the questions on teachers' definitions of social and academic language and their strategy use. Classroom observations provided verification of their definitions and their descriptions of instruction for academic language.
Findings indicated that teachers' definitions …
