Pesticides can be valuable tools in controlling lawn and garden pests. They must be used according to the label, with regard for the safety of people and animals.

Pest infestations often develop in lawns or gardens, damage lawns and ornamentals, and reduce the attractiveness of the home setting. When an infestation occurs, gardeners can reach a decision in pest management by answering the following questions: What is the pest? Is the pest causing unacceptable damage? Are controls needed? The Home-School Support programme is part of Education Services. It operates in all metropolitan divisions as well as in three country regions. Education officers are resource persons for field officers who have statutory powers. The education officers, however, have no statutory powers. There are 9 Education Officers in the metropolitan regions. Only two divisions have full time officers in the programme. In 1988 the programme serviced 443 clients in the three metropolitan regions and education officers were consulted over a further 7 52 clients. Hedges can be an attractive and functional part of home landscaping. This NebGuide outlines the steps for proper plant selection and establishment, care, and rejuvenation.

Not only are hedges attractive, but they serve some important landscape functions. Hedges, particularly sheared ones (formal), require time and some knowledge to establish them as well as annual pruning. It is also important to select suitable plant material and an appropriate site to minimize upkeep. Rapid growing plants like privet require more frequent shearing. Things to consider when constructing a rock retaining wall.

Each building site has terrain that lends itself to individualized design. Natural slopes, with changes of grade or planned changes in the overall grade may lead to more interesting and pleasing landscapes.

Nutritional Understanding Of Preschool Children Taught In The Home And Child Development Laboratory, Thomas R. Lee

This study was devised to determine the readiness of preschool children to learn about basic concepts of nutrition. Sixty preschool children enrolled in the Utah State University Child Development Laboratory, comprised the sample. Twenty children were taught at home by parents, 20 were taught at the Laboratory, and 20 received no instruction. The curriculum was based on the concept of nutrient density and used the Index of Nutritional Quality (INQ) in developing instructional materials. INQ is an index for comparing the amount of nutrients to the amount of calories in a food. Food Profile Cards, visual representations of this information …

Sattler Burns Anderson made a study of the Junior High School intramural sports program in the Richmond public schools. One of the purposes of the study, which was based on a questionnaire, was to get the student’s reactions to an intramural program. A large percentage of students participated in intramural sports (90.8 percent) and five main reasons were given by them for their participation: (1) to have fun, (2) to maintain better health through exercising in sports, (3) to improve athletic skills, (4) to maintain friendly relations with classmates, and (5) to compete against others.
