AbstractThe flipped classroom model is expanding rapidly in school districts across the United States and abroad. In a flipped classroom, students complete hands-on collaborative activities in class and watch instructional videos at home. This relatively new method has been tentatively linked to improved learning outcomes, especially for struggling students. Blended learning has become an alternative method to promote student achievement in a technology-orientated society. Flipped classrooms are implemented in more schools each year, particularly in courses requiring increased teacher guidance for mastery. While a foundation of research related to pedagogy and academic outcomes exists, research is limited surrounding student perceptions of the social and learning culture during flipped learning. Clinical pathways have been studied to promote best practices in nursing and enhance patient satisfaction. For 10 years a pediatric orthopedic surgical team at a Midwest hospital has not had a clinical pathway to treat or standardize care for adolescents following posterior spinal fusion surgery. Pain scores and patients' length of stay were collected using a retrospective chart review. This information was used to revise preoperative education materials and develop a visual poster. The study discussed in this investigation is part of a larger collaborative initiative between Laureate Education and Cambridge University Press (LEP-CUP collaboration). This second phase of the research, completed in 2013, aimed to further explore the conclusions from phase 1 and set out to identify effective and appropriate best practice blended learning models within the network. A study was set up with 36 teachers, all experienced ELT teachers with differing levels of experience in blended language teaching, who took part in extended focus groups discussions sessions prompted by a series of questions.
