Drowning is one of the leading causes of death worldwide and lifeguards’ action can be regarded as a significant contribution to change that reality. In this regard, the purpose of this systematic review was to identify factors associated with lifeguards’ performance. After extensive research on PsycArticles, PsicBooks, PsycInfo, SportDiscus, Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus and SportDiscus databases, containing the keywords “lifeguard” AND “performance”, “lifeguard” AND “skills” and “lifeguard” AND “drowning”, we obtained 429 research articles. After eliminating duplicates, excluding those that had no relevance to the study, and screening against set criteria, a total of five articles were fully reviewed. …

[First paragraph] Nurse prescribing has existed for over 50 years in some regions of the world. The diverse global nurse prescriptive authority landscape will be highlighted in this important publication. A framework embedding core components for safe and competent prescribers necessitates appropriate education, aligned regulatory authority and continuing professional development to uphold competencies. Evidence-informed models of nurse prescribing will weave in organisational and team support considerations required.

Problem: Training family nurse practitioners (FNPs) was identified as a concern within a university MSN FNP program. A major gap identified was that student practicum evaluation tools needed to be competency-based.
Context: The paradigm shift from content-focused curriculum to competency-based curriculum has led to a refinement in program accreditation and increased national certification requirements.
Interventions: Revision (aligned with NONPF core competencies and AACN Master’s essentials), adoption, implementation, and evaluation of competency-based FNP practicum evaluation tools and training of faculty and preceptors to use the revised tools and one-minute preceptor model were the interventions in this project.

The purpose of this study was to further the knowledge base in the aquatics field and assist in the development of universal standards to ensure that competent managers are employed at waterpark type venues. Until recently, thanks in part to the establishment of the Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC 2014), universal standards did not exist in aquatics. One rapidly expanding nursing program at a public research university in the mid-south region of the United States served as the site for this study. Recent nurse graduates were selected in a purposeful sampling from alumni who had conferred degrees from May 2007 through May 2013. Sixty-three graduates completed the online survey in Phase I and five recent graduates participated in semi-structured interviews during Phase II of the study. As job opportunities for health administration students become more competitive, it is crucial for departments to develop “cutting edge” opportunities for their students. Taking the lead from other health profession curricula, health administration departments are developing overarching competencies that demonstrate outcome qualities of their students. The competency-based curriculum results in students who can demonstrate specific competencies at the time of their graduation. For the past three years, the School of Health Administration at Texas State University-San Marcos has used a threeprong competency-based curriculum to ensure “career readiness” of students.

Innovation In Competency-Based Program Development: Leveraging The Advisory Board Faculty Alliance, Esmeralda De Los Santos, Daniel G. Dominguez, Kevin Lafrance

This paper describes the use of advisory boards in the development of two competency-based business programs: one graduate and the other undergraduate. Though the programs varied significantly in structure and content, both used focus group methodology to collect comprehensive and relevant input from advisory board members comprised of local subject matter experts. Analysis of each program’s developmental efforts demonstrates that, while the programs varied significantly in many aspects, both achieved the intended outcome. In both cases, advisory board input contributed to the development of a competency model and associated program curriculum that closely aligned with the program’s specific disciplines.

Context: While research recommends that health professions expand the instruction and use of evidence-based practice (EBP) due to the individualized approach to patient health care, few examples of the incorporation of EBP into academic courses exist in athletic training.

The research focused on the identification of entry-level competencies needed by Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) graduates who will begin employment in acute healthcare agencies in the next 10 years in Tennessee.
