Lessons In Process: Similarities Between Scientific And Artistic Creative Practice, Emily Prengaman

The STEAM Journal

This paper describes the similarities between scientific and artistic processes and explains why both are valuable in the STEAM classroom. This is important because students who understand that struggle is an inherent part of process develop growth mindsets and become better learners. The paper explores the connections between STEM and art. STEAM educators use the experiences of great scientists and artists, along with students personal experiences working through creative process to guide students to understand that learning is an experience. The best learning happens when we persist through challenges.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkontekstualisasikan pemikiran dua tokoh di abad 19 tentang pendidikan dan kebudayaan serta menemukan relevansi pemikiran tersebut dengan kompetensi peserta didik di abad 21. Penelitian ini merupakan kajian studi pustaka dengan menggunakan pendekatan analisis isi. Data berupa sumber primer dan sekunder. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan teknik library research. Data dianalisis secara kualitatif dengan pendekatan induktif. This three-article dissertation examines three distinct approaches to supporting English learners (ELs) by leveraging technology. Framed by the third generation of cultural-historical activity theory (Engeström, 1987; 2001), this research illuminates ways different stakeholder groups within varying activity systems support ELs, by examining technology as 1) an instructional tool in the classroom, 2) a mechanism for family engagement, and 3) a means for preparing teachers to serve ELs. Problem: Santa Rosa Community Health (SRCH) is one of the largest federally qualified health centers in Northern California, providing health care to more than 30,000 patients. More than half of the patients receiving care at the SRCH Lombardi site are Latino patients. Patients self-identify as Latino or other ethnicity on the initial health center registration form. SRCH serves 964 patients with diabetes. Due to limited access to appointments and resources, seeing a healthcare provider regularly can be difficult, posing a barrier to diabetes management. More than half of New York City’s 1.1 million students attend an over-utilized school, where the number of students enrolled exceeds the official capacity. But for years, the School Construction Authority has been slow to identify and acquire sites to build new schools. When City Council ordered a task force to review nearly 30,000 potential sites, the SCA excluded parent representatives from the analysis process, then reported that only two sites could potentially be used for schools. This qualitative case study explores the perceptions of educators during the candidacy phase of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme in a suburban Midwest school. The methodology was comprised of a two-phase research design. During Phase 1, participants responded anonymously through written narrative responses via electronic questionnaire. This senior capstone research project examines how mindfulness could be integrated into the school classrooms through the use of literature review, interviews with elementary school teachers in the Monterey Bay area and surveys with several students along with one subject participant at the California State University Monterey Bay. As a result, the findings reveal that most students and teachers thought that mindfulness proved to be successful and useful when integrating it with the younger population to deal with their emotions.

Only 27% of U.S. eighth graders are at or above grade level proficiency in writing (National Center for Education Statistics, 2012). Students with specific learning disabilities frequently exhibit skill deficits in planning, organizing, and writing conventions, and show inadequate awareness to write strategically (Troia, 2006). The purpose of this study is to examine evidence-based writing interventions aimed at enhancing the writing skills of students with specific learning disabilities and then to indicate which interventions were proven to be effective. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of computer-based-instruction (CBI) and multimedia when used as an intervention with upper elementary students experiencing reading difficulties on the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) Reading Assessments. The researcher employed a quantitative, causal-comparative research design for this study. A Texas supplemental reading program, the Istation Advanced Reading Program, was used as a Response to Intervention (RTI) for those at-risk students of failing their Reading STAAR Test in the fourth grade and to sustain an effective reading program district-wide.
