This qualitative multi-case study investigated not only the role of assistant superintendents of curriculum and instruction, but the strategies and best practices used by four assistant superintendents of curriculum and instruction and a deputy superintendent of teaching and learning from East Texas in order to improve classroom instruction and support teachers in the high-stakes testing environment. This study examined the Georgia Teachers Effectiveness System and its effects on teachers’ teaching practices, including teacher motivation and teacher behavior. This was a mixed method study that included a focus group, surveys, and document analysis to address the independent variables: Teacher Assessment Performance Standards, Professional Growth, Student Growth Percentile, Student Learning Objectives and Teacher Effectiveness Measurement.

This study examined ‘exceptional’ superintendent leadership in ethnically and economically diverse school districts. The purpose of the study was to use comparative case studies to better understand the beliefs and strategies these proven leaders employ to positively impact achievement and close the opportunity gap for students in ethnically and economically diverse school districts. The study examined three superintendents from the state of Illinois with respect to their philosophy, identified district strengths, culturally responsive attitudes and actions, leadership style, core beliefs, direct impact on students, and decision-making process to identify commonalities and differences that exist.

Despite legal advancements recognizing the rights of individuals with disabilities, societal barriers are still arising from the medical model of disability. These obstacles have resulted in marginalizing and isolating practices, in turn leading to the underrepresentation of individuals with disabilities in the workforce and, by extension, in leadership positions.

Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) is an urban school district in Louisville, Kentucky. While serving more than 100,000 students, JCPS is the 27th largest school system in the United States. JCPS serves students with moderate to severe disabilities (MSD) seeking to attain an alternative diploma upon exiting secondary school. This dissertation study explores the perceptions of principals as literacy leaders and the enactment of these perceptions in high-need elementary schools. Literacy leadership, as perceived by principals, was analyzed based on interview data from six participants. Individual cases were studied for the unique characterizations each participant brought to the construct of literacy leadership through their own lived experience. Cross-case analysis was conducted in order to draw out themes among participants. Distributed Leadership For Equity And Excellence In Mathematics: An Elementary School Case Study, Comfort Enono Akwaji-Anderson

The need for schools to develop and implement actions that will clearly improve the academic performance of all children is of great importance. Schools face pressure to improve K-12 mathematics instruction to reach all students, regardless of economic, linguistic, or cultural background (NCSM, 2008, 2016). Supporting academic excellence and equity in school mathematics requires strong leadership (Blankstein & Noguera, 2015). Recognizing that leadership in a school does not fall on the shoulders of just one person (Spillane & Healey, 2010, p. 256), the purpose of this case study was to explore the “how” of leadership, specifically the leadership practices that get us to the “why” (e.g., equity) and “what” (e.g., leadership for excellence) of mathematics education. The overarching question driving this research was: “What are the leadership practices that are intended to promote equity and excellence in mathematics education?” Using Spillane, Halverson, & Diamond’s Distributed Leadership Perspective (2004), the goal was to understand the respective distributed roles teachers and other individuals took in the process of achieving equity and excellence in mathematics at one elementary school. Formal (e.g., Head of School, Central Office Administrator) and Informal (e.g., teachers and parents) leaders were interviewed and observed. Data analysis focused on identifying the macro-functions (e.g., overall leadership practices) and micro-tasks (e.g., day-to-day, short-term tasks) that leaders engaged in to promote equity and excellence. Leadership practices were focused in three areas: Supporting the Teaching/Learning of all Students; Supporting the Teaching of Diverse Students; and Parent/Family Connection. Five primary categories of leadership practices were identified: Relationship, Instruction Support, School Climate, and Parent Involvement.

The purpose of this mixed method study is to determine if women who lead secondary schools have gender bias experiences that might influence their leadership styles. The study focused on the accounts of five women who lead secondary schools, their gender bias experiences, their perceived leadership style and whether or not they believed the experience influences how they lead. Through in-depth interviews and survey completion, the data from both sources revealed the common leadership styles and gender bias experiences among the research participants.
