Why That? An Ecological Perspective Of Ell Teachers’ Professional Development, Brian C. Rose
Why That? An Ecological Perspective Of Ell Teachers’ Professional Development, Brian C. Rose
Journal of Educational Research and Innovation
This article aims to identify the influences which affect the professional development choices of teachers who work with English language learners. Through a qualitative analysis of the experiences of four teachers in four different schools in two school districts, the professional development choices of these teachers are seen as a response to particular institutional forces. These influences mediate the teachers’ choices for professional learning and include concerns related to the classroom, the school site, the district, and the legislative arena. Ultimately, this study provides guidance for teachers trying to identify the specific roles and responsibilities they embody in their schools …
Improvisational Teaching For Emergent Bilinguals, Denchai Prabjandee
Improvisational Teaching For Emergent Bilinguals, Denchai Prabjandee
Journal of Educational Research and Innovation
The present collaborative ethnographic case study was design to explore teaching practices for English Language Learners (ELLs) in the United States, hereafter called "emergent bilinguals" (García, 2009). Through the theoretical lens of ethnographic vulnerability (Behar, 1996), I conducted 40-hour observations, four interviews, and artifact collections. By using an impressionist tale writing style throughout this article (Maanen, 2011), this paper presents the journey of an elementary school teacher who tries to employ classroom practices, teaching strategies, and assessments to educate emergent bilinguals. Drawing on ethnographic data, I propose an effective teaching approach called improvisational teaching. This teaching approach may be beneficial …

A Global Experience: Teaching International Students In An International Setting, Dia Ruth Gary
Journal of Educational Research and Innovation
This study analyzed the four stages of acculturation and how an educator teaching abroad, instructing International Students, experienced the path of acculturation through the emotions of elation, resistance, transformation, and integration. Pedagogy is seen with new eyes, and a renewed passion is reignited through a global experience. A new understanding and empathy is developed for those living as an expat, far from their native country. Moreover, a limited view of the world changes from a view of egocentric selfishness to an appreciation of cultural diversity.

The Role Of Mentor-Student Teacher Relationships In Building Standard-Based Elementary Mathematics Teaching Pedagogy, Hyunjung Kang
Journal of Educational Research and Innovation
This study explores the importance of field experience, in particular, the mentor-novice relationships of educators and student teachers in elementary mathematics classrooms. The author investigated the critical roles of mentors in terms of student teachers’ continuous learning about teaching standards-based pedagogy. To explore this mentor-student teacher relationship, the researcher investigated three pairs of mentor-student teacher cases and explored the patterns of successful mentoring and how these patterns served to create a context in which mentoring supported a teacher’s efforts to teach mathematics in alignment with standards-based pedagogy. The study broadens teacher education literature by raising compelling issues about the importance …

Identifying the best predictors of academic performance and college readiness is crucial for promoting success in postsecondary institutions. This cross-sectional study of 587 students examined the association between ethnicity and gender on high school students’ 1) high school grade level competence in reading, writing, and mathematics, and 2) a test of college readiness. Additionally, we determined whether the following parental factors were associated with students’ perceptions of attending college and performance on a college readiness test: 1) parents’ highest level of education, 2) parents’ perceptions of students’ level of education, and 3) parents’ perceived reasons of why students might not …

Early Literacy Experiences Of Independent University Youth, Christina Taylor
Journal of Educational Research and Innovation
The purpose of this constructivist qualitative study is to describe the early literacy experiences of independent university students at a mid-size public institution in the Rocky Mountain region of the Western United States. Data are collected through single, face-to-face, semistructured one hour interviews with five volunteer participants. The narrative study finds that the parallel experiences in early life and early literacy of the participants relate to their pursuit of higher education and also challenges stereotypes which educators and caregivers may hold about poor and seemingly dysfunctional families. This research informs the best practices of early childhood educators, higher education faculty, …

Portraits Of The Journey To Teaching English Language Learners: An Inquiry Into Teacher Identity Construction, Denchai Prabjanee
Journal of Educational Research and Innovation
The inquiry into teacher identity construction has received attention among teacher educators. Guided by narrative epistemology and utilizing sociocultural theoretical lenses, the author employed a portraiture methodology to investigate teacher identity construction of two female teachers. The data were collected through postmodern, reflexive, and dyadic interviews, artifacts, and observations. Narrative analysis method was employed to create themes and the themes were used to craft portraits of teacher identity construction, illuminating the journey to teaching English Language Learners. Implications for second language teacher educators were provided.

Incorporating Service Learners In Community Engaged Research: Experiential Application Of Social Science Perspectives And Research Methods, Christine Marston, Kyle Ann Nelson
Journal of Educational Research and Innovation
Community engaged scholarship and service learning pedagogy are increasing trends in higher education (Reardon, 1998; Fitzgerald et al., 2012; Campus Compact, 2013a; Fuller, 2013) and yield synergistic value to the three-pronged mission of higher education of teaching, service and research (Boyer, 1990; Furco, 2010; Stanton, 2012; Fitzgerald et al., 2012; CCEC, 2013). Engaged social science faculty offer meaningful contributions to the community and their work serves to enhance university-community partnerships (Stanton, 2007; Furco, 2010; Klein et al., 2012). Students participating in service learning in these fields can “acquire first-hand knowledge” as well as develop social science skills and perspectives through …

Hazards To The Doctoral Journey: Guidance For New Doctoral Students, Stacy Loyd, Jenni Harding-Dekam, Boni Hamilton
Journal of Educational Research and Innovation
Doctoral students enter an intense program of study that often bears little resemblance to prior educational experiences. Students are often surprised by the emotional and cognitive toll the program takes: loss of identity, feelings of isolation and incompetence, and concerns about meeting the academic demands of the program. The best defense against these barriers is to know what they are how to overcome them. Recognizing that beginner doctoral students may lack experiences with scholarly papers, the authors provide an easy-to-read autoethnographic case study that explores their own doctoral experiences. The article is addressed directly to new doctoral students and reveals …

"Am I At Peace"?: A Deeper Look Into Identity Formation And Integration, Annette Susanne Peters, Maria Lahman
Journal of Educational Research and Innovation
This holistic case study exploring the identity formation of a multicultural female college student stemmed from a previous study. Understanding the process of cultural integration is vital for counselors and educators to recognize because the confusion in integrating crosscultural experiences and culture groups can be part of the reason an individual seeks counseling. Observation, five in-depth interviews, and a photo journal composed of ten pictures were used to gather information over a span of six months. Furthermore, six themes identified in the initial study were explored to see how they appear in the participant’s everyday life. The six themes were …

Journal of Educational Research and Innovation
The relationship between positive school orientation and the psychological factors of values and wellness were examined in a sample of 319 Japanese middle school students. Participants’ perceptions of wellness were consistently related to a reported sense of school bonding, but not necessarily to attendance or participation in extracurricular activities. The relationship between values and positive school orientation was less clear; values appeared to be more aligned with voluntary actions such as participation in extracurricular activities. Gender differences in student values were noted in that males placed more emphasis on extracurricular activities, while females placed more emphasis on attendance. Implications for …

In the knowledge-based society, where information rapidly changes and disseminates worldwide, self-directed learning is an important ability for college students to possess. In the current study, self-directed learning readiness of college students in Thailand was investigated, and comparisons of this readiness were made across years of education and majors. Undergraduate students (n = 156) in colleges of education in Thailand completed an online survey. The results revealed that Thai college students reported having self-directed learning readiness at a moderate to high level. The two dimensions (creativity and openness to learning) were at a moderate level, but the other six dimensions …
Breaking Down Barriers: Successful Transition Planning For Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Exceptional Students, Kara F. Halley, Michelle Terese Trujillo
Breaking Down Barriers: Successful Transition Planning For Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Exceptional Students, Kara F. Halley, Michelle Terese Trujillo
Journal of Educational Research and Innovation
While transition services provided to the majority of students with disabilities may be seen as beneficial and as having the potential to lead to positive post-school outcomes, involvement and expectations of several students’ families are taking a backseat to the involvement and expectations of professionals in this process. Discrepancies between family and school expectations and desires can only lead to the failure of students’ transition plans. It is increasingly more likely that service providers who develop individual education plans and collaborate on transition planning teams will work with culturally and linguistically diverse students and families. Despite growing diversity in our …
