Teacher Perceptions Of Teacher Performance Pay And Performance Evaluation In Yunnan Province, China, Yi Hua

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

In China, teacher performance pay has been implemented for eight years, but teachers’ perceptions regarding its implementation have been examined seldomly. Exploring teachers’ perceptions is a path to hear teachers’ voices, inspect implementation practice, and evaluate impacts. This mixed-method study explored teachers’ perceptions toward performance pay in Panda School District of Kunming City, Yunnan Province, China through surveys, interviews, and artifacts. A total of 333 valid responses to the survey were collected and 14 teachers participated in follow-up semi-structured interviews. The quantitative results indicate low to moderate teacher support for performance pay. The qualitative themes generated through content analysis present …

A Program Evaluation: Fidelity Of Implementation Of The Wilson Reading System In A Mid-Atlantic School District, Amy H. Stamm

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Reading is at the heart of education and it is the basic skill upon which all others are built. Reading difficulties underlie much of the differences in academic achievement between students with specific learning disabilities in reading and non-disabled students; addressing these challenges when children are young is the key for long-term success (Borman, 2005; Cortiella & Horowitz, 2014; Juel, 1988; National Reading Panel, 2000; Torgesen et al., 2001). The purpose of this mixed methods program evaluation was to provide information to stakeholders about the implementation of the Wilson Reading System in the Mid Atlantic School Division (MASD). By examining …

Novice Educator Perceptions Of The Influences Of A New Teacher Mentoring Program In A Hard To Staff School, Jennifer Lee Vaughan

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Abstract Supporting and retaining new teachers is an ever-growing challenge faced by school districts across the nation (Anhorn, 2008; Ingersoll & Strong, 2011; Lieberman, Saxl, & Miles, 1988; Lorti, 1975). One way that many schools approach this opportunity to support new teachers is through teacher mentoring programs (Goldrick, 2016; Gray & Gray, 1985; Moody, 2009; Strong & Baron, 2004). as school leaders implement mentoring programs, it is important to know whether the programs are meeting their stated goals (Stufflebeam & Shinkfield, 2007). The purpose of this program evaluation was to look at the perceived influence of a teacher mentoring program …

School of Education Articles

In 14 focus group interviews, sixth- to eighth-grade high-ability students from high- (n = 36) and low-income (n = 45) families were asked to describe the barriers they perceived to their academic success. Three themes were identified through the qualitative analysis: Constraining Environments, Integration versus Isolation, and Resource Plenty versus Resource Poor. Students in both groups experienced environments not conducive to learning, inhibiting peers, and teachers as a barrier. Students in the low-income group described mayhem in their schools, which interfered significantly with learning. These students were highly integrated in their school community, whereas the …

Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice

This paper provides an analysis of a sub-set of data gathered by Allan and Madden (2008) in the National Study of Student Hazing that included 11,482 survey responses from undergraduate students enrolled at 53 colleges and universities and more than 300 interviews with students and campus personnel at 18 of those institutions. Findings from an analysis of the student interview data to explore how students define hazing and the extent to which their definitions may be gendered. Binary constructions of harm, building friendship, and compulsion/opting are key themes described; implications and recommendations for practice and future research are also discussed.

Risky Recruitment: How Rape Myth Acceptance Among Potential New Sorority Members Is Related To Their Self-Efficacy To Prevent Sexual Assault And Perceptions Of University Sexual Assault Reporting, Rebecca R. Ortiz Ph.D., Bailey Thompson Ph.D.

Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice

This study examined how rape myth acceptance among potential new sorority members is related to their self-efficacy to prevent sexual assault and perceptions of how their university would handle a sexual assault report. Results indicate that the more these women reported acceptance with common rape myths, the less efficacious they felt to prevent sexual assault and the less likely they were to believe the university would handle a sexual assault report adequately. Universities must therefore consider how to dispel dangerous rape myths among this unique population to ensure sorority women feel comfortable intervening in and reporting sexual assault incidents.

The Conceptualization Of Sisterhood Within The Collegiate Sorority: An Exploration, Joshua Shutts Ph.D., Gentry Mccreary Ph.D., Sarah Cohen M.Ed.

Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice

This article expands the work of Cohen, McCreary and Schutts (2017) by devising, testing and validating a scale that measures five distinct schema of sisterhood. The scale development process resulted in a 24-item measure made up of five correlated dimensions: shared social experiences, belonging, support and encouragement, accountability, and common purpose. The five-factor model was stable across multiple samples. The construct validity of the sisterhood scale, including convergent and discriminant validity was also demonstrated.

Abstract The demographic composition of America’s population has changed significantly over the past several decades which is reflected in classrooms that are culturally and linguistically more diverse. In particular, the rapidly growing population of non-native English speaking students has highlighted the need for language instruction programs to increase linguistic proficiency outcomes and close pervasive gaps in academic achievement in comparison to native English speaking students. Title III of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA), requires that local education agencies (LEAs) as guided by state education agencies …

Understanding The Lived Experiences Of Low-Income Pell Grant Undergraduate Students At A Most Competitive College, Michael Harold Postma

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Abstract Low-income Pell Grant recipients represent a small percentage of undergraduate students at America’s elite colleges and universities. The purpose of this phenomenological case study was to understand the lived experiences of low-income Pell Grant students who attended a most competitive college. I used Tinto and Pusser’s (2006) institutional action model as my theoretical framework because this theory enabled a focus on the institutional factors low-income Pell Grant students identified as contributing to their persistence to succeed within the most competitive college context. My study employed a qualitative research approach. The 11 student participants – seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshman …
