This poster session highlighted the Maine UCEDD’s role as a statewide resource and collaborative partner in advancing inclusive practice in Maine’s early care and education system. It covered the delivery of a continuum of supports for inclusion; examined collaborations that create systemic impact; and reviewed the services needed to increase knowledge, skills and application of practices to improve the quality of early care and education settings in Maine.

Picture Vocabulary Growth In Students With And Without Disabilities In An Early Childhood Program That Targets Poor Families, Alan B. Cobo-Lewis

We compared growth in the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test between children with disabilities and children without disabilities in Educare Central Maine, a highly resourced data-driven Birth-5 early care and education program that targets children at risk of school failure because of socioeconomic factors. Children with disabilities made up 13% of enrollment. Children with disabilities tended to catch up with the typically developing children as they spent more time in Educare.

This self-assessment checklist is a companion to the Technical Assistance Competencies for Maine’s Early Childhood Workforce (Labas, Lavallee, Downs, & Gallik, 2017). The checklist supports Technical Assistance (TA) professionals in assessing their skills within the five competency areas: 1) Professionalism; 2) Adult Learning Principles; 3) Building Relationships; 4) The Technical Assistance Process; and 5) Systems Knowledge. The checklist is designed to be used by TA professionals who support early childhood practitioners (serving children prenatal through age 8 and their families) and work across early childhood systems and sectors.

This publication, Technical Assistance Competencies for Maine’s Early Childhood Workforce (2017), was developed to define the relevant knowledge, skills and dispositions required by Technical Assistance (TA) professionals who support early childhood practitioners (serving prenatal through age 8) in Maine. TA professionals represent a wide range of disciplines and support a diverse early childhood workforce. These professionals adhere to varying regulations and standards and work within multiple settings. The framework for Maine’s TA Competencies defines the components of quality TA service provision across disciplines and also aligns with state priorities and national efforts.

Document review and interviews were conducted with college admissions' personnel to gather data regarding alignment of proficiency-based diploma systems and college eligibility and entry requirements. In addition, leaders and representative personnel from and Maine businesses and the U.S. military were interviewed to identify postsecondary career entry requirements and attributes of high quality workers. As requested by the Maine Legislature's Joint Standing Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs, the Maine Education Policy Research Institute (MEPRI) has conducted a study with the purpose of examining current research and evidence-based policies related to teacher credentialing systems. The goal is to inform revisions to Maine's current system for teacher credentialing. MEPRI is a nonpartisan research institute funded jointly by the Maine State Legislature and the University of Maine System. Part I summarizes key topics of federal education policy articulating accountability requirements for state education agencies (SEAs) and local education agencies (LEAs, or school districts). In the 127th Legislative Session, "An Act to Implement Certain Recommendations of the Maine Proficiency Education Council" (S.P. 660 - L.D. 1627) was passed into law as Chapter 489 amending the chaptered law "An Act to Prepare Maine People for the Future Economy" (S.P.439 - L.D.1422) passed in 2012 requiring Maine school districts to implement proficiency-based diploma requirements and standards-based education systems.
