School Administrators' Beliefs Regarding The Relationship Between School Improvements And Formal School Registration, Harm P. Witten Jan 2013

School Administrators' Beliefs Regarding The Relationship Between School Improvements And Formal School Registration, Harm P. Witten

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

In 2004, the Government of Western Australia introduced an inspection-type formal school registration process for Non-Government (Independent) Schools, fulfilling the legislative requirement of a new School Education Act of 1999 (Part 4, Sec.159). This formal school registration process featured twelve criteria that are used to evaluate the quality of education. The government claimed that it would ensure a good education for all students in Western Australian, including those students enrolled in Independent Schools. However, very little is known about this formal school registration process, the twelve criteria used in it, or even if school administrators believe that it has helped …

Practice Makes Perfect? A Retrospective Look At A Community Of Practice, Ramirose Ilene Attebury, Robert Perret, Jeremy Kenyon, Deborah Green

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Communities of practice have been touted in the organizational literature as an effective form of professional development in the workplace. When the University of Idaho Library faculty created one in the fall of 2008, they hoped the group would enhance new librarians’ understanding of publication requirements and research methods. Although the community seemed healthy during its first year, problems arose in subsequent years that led to its decline. Seeking to understand the nature of this decline, the authors conducted a survey and initiated a focus group discussion of former members. Analysis of data led the authors to identify three themes …

Making An Impact: Campus-Wide Collaboration For Course And Learning Space Transformation, Clarence Maybee, Tomalee Doan, Catherine Fraser Riehle

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

At Purdue University, the Libraries participate in a provost-initiated, campus-wide course redesign program called Instruction Matters: Purdue Academic Course Transformation (IMPACT). This initiative aims to bring active-learning to foundational courses traditionally taught through lectures. Purdue librarians recognized the IMPACT initiative as one way to enter the conversations blooming on our campus about the nature of learning, curriculum design, and how space design impacts potential learning. This article presents three perspectives: 1) the information literacy coordinator, 2) a libraries’ administrator with a gift for space planning, and 3) an in-the-trenches liaison to course redesign projects. Each discusses the IMPACT initiative from …

Aesthetics In The Classroom For Social Justice : How Do The Theories Of John Dewey, Maxine Greene, And Jane Piirto Inform Us?, Valerie Meiners Comeaux

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study asks 1) What is the relationship between art, creativity, and social justice? 2) How do the theories of John Dewey, Maxine Greene, and Jane Piirto inform our understanding of this relationship? 3) What is the role of the arts in contemporary curriculum? To answer these questions, the study chronicled the various roles of art in Western society, from Classical Greece through the present day, before exploring the aesthetic theories of Dewey, Greene, and Piirto. The findings suggest that the absence of an arts-integrated curriculum in most American public schools does not imply the absence of art programs in …

The Impostor Phenomenon: Overcoming Internalized Barriers And Recognizing Achievements, Queena Hoang Jan 2013

The Impostor Phenomenon: Overcoming Internalized Barriers And Recognizing Achievements, Queena Hoang

The Vermont Connection

The “impostor phenomenon” is the crippling feeling of self-doubt, intellectual inadequacy, and anticipated failure that haunts people who attribute their success to luck or help from others rather than their own abilities (Nelson, 2011). These feelings, often undetected by others, manifest as anxiety, self-deprecation, or an irrational fear of failure in light of previous success (Bernard, Dollinger, & Ramaniah, 2002; Langford & Clance, 1993; Leary, Patton, Orlando, & Frank, 2000). Clance and Imes (1978) first discovered this psychological experience while studying high-achieving female college students and professionals and thus coined the term impostor phenomenon (IP). This article will explore the …

Expanding Our Understanding Of Nontraditional Students: Family Privilege And Its Affect On College Students, Julienne R. Oberts Jan 2013

Expanding Our Understanding Of Nontraditional Students: Family Privilege And Its Affect On College Students, Julienne R. Oberts

The Vermont Connection

This article reviews current literature on the topic of nontraditional students. Additional materials related to social capital in the forms of family involvement and parental support are also reviewed to illustrate their relation to the present understanding of the experiences of nontraditional students in higher education. The current definition of what it means to be nontraditional is not sufficient, and an argument for the inclusion of considerations of family privilege is presented.

Pedagogy Of The Oppressed, The Musical? Using Theatrical Scholartistry To Transform Teaching And Learning, Dirk Jonathan Rodrick Jan 2013

Pedagogy Of The Oppressed, The Musical? Using Theatrical Scholartistry To Transform Teaching And Learning, Dirk Jonathan Rodrick

The Vermont Connection

Every classroom is a performance space (Pineau, 1994). The relations of power inherent to every classroom must be dismantled to transform pedagogy and make learning mutually liberatory for both teacher and student (Freire, 1996). Using Friere’s (1996) Pedagogy of the Oppressed as a theoretical foundation, this article presents ScholARTistry as a medium to (re)imagine teaching and learning. Simply put, ScholARTistry is a hybrid practice that combines tools used by the literary, visual, and/or performing arts with tools used by educators and other social scientists to explore the human condition (Cahnmann, 2006). First, Freire’s (1996) contributions to emancipatory scholarship and educational …

Removing The Mask: Using Masculine Identity Development In Student Conduct, Mathew J.L. Shepard Jan 2013

Removing The Mask: Using Masculine Identity Development In Student Conduct, Mathew J.L. Shepard

The Vermont Connection

Research showing men’s overrepresentation in student conduct processes (Harper, Harris, & Mmeje, 2005) provides relevance for using masculine identity theory in student conduct administration. By connecting literature regarding student conduct with that of masculinity in college men, specifically focusing on Edwards and Jones’s (2009) grounded theory, implications for student conduct administrators to better support students are suggested.

An Insider's View : An Exploration Of Implementing The Common Core Standards For Mathematical Practice For Elementary Teachers In A Rural Louisiana Charter School, Teri P. Roberts

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This qualitative single case study in a rural start-up charter school in North Louisiana explored the impact that professional learning from Whole-Faculty Study Group sessions had on teachers’ understanding of the most significant contributions of the Standards for Mathematical Practice in preparation of the implementation of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM). The theoretical framework proposed that structured time for collaboration would enhance teachers’ understanding of the math practice standards. The literature indicated that collaborative job-embedded professional learning can lead to improvements in teachers’ knowledge and practice and that understanding the Standards for Mathematical Practice is key to …

The Use Of Applets For Developing Understanding In Mathematics: A Case Study Using Maplets For Calculus With Continuity Concepts., Raymond Ellis Patenaude

Theses and Dissertations

The Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) are founded on a long history of mathematics education research emphasizing the importance of teaching mathematics for understanding. The CCSSM along with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) recommend the use of technology in the teaching of mathematics. New mobile technologies in society facilitate use in mathematics classrooms, and these technologies rely on software applications called applets. Certain applets have been developed for use in teaching mathematics.

This study investigated the questions: Is it possible to determine the characteristics of applets that lead students toward greater understanding of mathematical concepts? …

What About The Black Greeks? : Supporting Nphcs At Pwis, Aleidra Allen Jan 2013

What About The Black Greeks? : Supporting Nphcs At Pwis, Aleidra Allen

LSU Master's Theses

Many Black Greek-Letter organizations (BGLOs) were founded at historically black colleges and universities. However, subsequent chapters were chartered at various institutional types, including predominately White institutions (PWIs). Nine BGLOs make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), their umbrella organization. At PWIs, this council is typically housed in the same office as the predominately White fraternity and sorority councils. Still, there are many attributes of NPHC that make it unique from the others. To best direct this study, existing literature was reviewed. Few scholars examined NPHC specifically and little attention was given to institutional types. The purpose of this study is …

Variability Across Repeat Assessment Of Working Memory And Processing Speed In Referred Populations, Dawn Baker Jan 2013

Variability Across Repeat Assessment Of Working Memory And Processing Speed In Referred Populations, Dawn Baker

Theses and Dissertations

Developmentally, it is expected that the processes of working memory and processing speed will improve throughout childhood as a child's brain develops. However, students with learning, attention, and other childhood disorders often display difficulties in these areas. This study investigated the use of repeated measures to ascertain variability over time of two important cognitive processes: Working Memory and Processing Speed in a clinically referred population as measured by the WISC-IV to determine if a significant discrepancy exists between administrations. The study also investigated whether differences in Working Memory and Processing Speed from administration to administration would be greater in children …

The purpose of this study is to test Gordon Allport's theory of Contact Hypothesis about cultural attitude change in college students. Participants were college First year students participating in First year seminar classes in a small southeastern liberal arts university. The treatment group of randomly selected First year seminar classes was exposed to a one-week seminar designed to address the issue of cultural diversity. A non-treatment group received the standard instruction on this issue. The content of the seminar included exposure to multicultural issues that include Allport's most important tenants for changing prejudicial attitudes. For this study components of Allport's …

A Constructivist Examination Of Counselors' Conceptualization Of "Sexuality": Implications For Counselor Education, Wenndy Dupkoski Mallicoat Jan 2013

A Constructivist Examination Of Counselors' Conceptualization Of "Sexuality": Implications For Counselor Education, Wenndy Dupkoski Mallicoat

Theses and Dissertations

Due to the dialectical dilemma between meeting the demands of the managed health care industry through the adherence to the medical model while promoting an emphasis on wellness, the counseling profession does not promote a consistent definition of sexuality. Using a qualitative, phenomenological approach from a constructivist lens, this study was conducted to examine the construct "sexuality" and "sexuality counseling" from counselors' perspectives. One synchronous online focus group and two online individual interviews were conducted with counselors predominantly in the Southeastern United States. Themes from the data include: Sexuality is multi-dimensional; sexuality is developmental; sexuality counseling is dialectical; and sexuality …

A Case Study Of Principals' Knowledge Of Early Childhood Literacy, Christine Elizabeth Leblanc Jan 2013

A Case Study Of Principals' Knowledge Of Early Childhood Literacy, Christine Elizabeth Leblanc

Theses and Dissertations

Nationally approximately 40 percent of third grade students do not read at grade level. Principals play a critical role in providing leadership in the implementation of Response to Intervention (RtI) to ensure that students not making adequate yearly progress receive targeted instruction to address their deficiencies. The purpose of this study is to explore the experience of five principals through an investigation of their understanding of the reading process as it relates to the implementation of RtI in their schools. I specifically wish to understand: What do principals know about early childhood literacy and how do they use that knowledge …

Why Did I Ask That Question? Bilingual/Esl Pre-Service Teachers’ Insights, Zulmaris Diaz, Michael Whitacre, Joy Esquierdo, Jose A. Ruiz-Escalante

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Questioning techniques have historically been considered the measurement by which teachers challenge and gauge student learning. Much has been said about questioning strategies used by teachers; yet little is known about the strategies used by pre-service teachers, especially those that are working with English language learners. This study presents findings from a qualitative study that explored what types of questions pre-service teachers use and their reflections on the use of such strategies. Eight bilingual/ESL pre-service teachers in South Texas were videotaped during a math and a language arts lesson, attended focus groups, and participated in an exit interview. The findings …

International Graduate Students' Experiences With Race, Racial Identity, And Racialization At Home And In The United States: A Comparative Case Study, Ashlee Amanda Lewis Jan 2013

International Graduate Students' Experiences With Race, Racial Identity, And Racialization At Home And In The United States: A Comparative Case Study, Ashlee Amanda Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

As the number of students studying in the United States (U.S.) has risen, scholars have increasingly paid attention to multiple aspects of the international student experience. Despite a proliferation of studies generally addressing the topic of international students, few studies have explicitly addressed the ways in which international students' sense of identity may be complicated during their time living and studying in the U.S. Scholarly inquiries into how international students experience racialization and the American racial paradigm have been missing from the overall discourse around "the international student experience."

This dissertation study contributes to that discourse by examining international graduate …

A Case Study Seeking Indicators Of Coherence In A Pete Program, Robert John Doan Jan 2013

A Case Study Seeking Indicators Of Coherence In A Pete Program, Robert John Doan

Theses and Dissertations

A Case Study Seeking Indicators of Coherence in a PETE Program

The purpose of this study was to examine the coherence of one facet of a single PETE program. Of particular interest was the role of one unique content course within the curriculum. Teacher educators have been challenged to respond to a variety of forces and to design more effective programs of teacher preparation. There are at least two challenges for teacher educators to respond to these challenges to their effectiveness. One challenge is that there is little empirical research focused on teacher educators themselves (Grundy & Hatton, 1995; John, …

Theses and Dissertations

the student population in the United States within the next several years, while predominately White teachers will continue to compromise the teaching population. Schools continually fail to serve racially, culturally, and linguistically diverse students, particularly African American students. As such, a critical issue within teacher education is how to best prepare teachers to teach across the lines of ethnicity/race, language, and social class.

In response to this issue, this study looked closely at the identities, perspectives, and experiences of a teacher educator and undergraduate, preservice teachers throughout a one-credit education course infused with elements of equity pedagogies and an added …

Care As The Essential Element In Teacher And Student Interactions: Examining Dialogue As A Vehicle For Building A Caring Environment, Crystal Plumley Mcswain

Theses and Dissertations

This present study considers to what extent dialogue between teachers and students can support a caring environment. Research investigating behavior and qualities of effective teaching has been liked with caring relationships (Anfara & Schmid, 2007; Marzano, 2007; Noddings, 2005). "Relationships and instruction are not an either-or-proposition, but rather an incredible combination." (Brown, 2010, p. 10) The present study will examine to what extent dialogue, as one of the components of a proposed model of caring, can build a caring environment in seventh grade classrooms at a local middle school (Noddings, 2005, p.53). Specifically, dialogue skills such as intonation, empathy, respect, …
