Revision And Rewriting, Theory Of Knowledge, Grade 11-12, John D. Miles, Victoria Putnam, Candice Cliff

Arthur Vining Davis High Impact Fellows Projects

This project takes into consideration something that high school writers often overlook—revision and rewriting. We visited the classroom on three occasions to lead different kinds of revision workshops. Victoria led workshop one that focused on structure at the thesis and paragraph level. The second workshop was developed using some specific methods from Dr. Miles. We also took time to individually help students discuss structure on the larger scale and how to make that structure useful at the level of argumentation. The third visit was for individual and group conferences with students. Tori also took the role of mentor for two …

Using Physlets In Hs Physical Science, Mackay Salley, Matt Menard

Arthur Vining Davis High Impact Fellows Projects

The project proposed involves using physlets as a means of getting students engaged and delivering ideas and concepts in a novel manner. Physlets are Java applets that are designed to address a specific Physics concept. There are many similar applets for other fields such as chemlets which address Chemistry topics. There are many resources regarding physlets and we have chosen to focus on one repository, Physlet Physics by Wolfgang Christian and Mario Belloni. With the funding from the Arthur Vining Davis Jr. Grant, we can purchase a reference text and a copy of a CD with approximately three hundred physlets …

Can The Strong Get Stronger? A Laboratory Investigation Of Natural Selection For Antimicrobial Resistance, Tracie M. Ivy, Natalie W. Spivey, Sarah Grace Keaveany, Elizabeth Ramsey, Patrick Sellars, Deborah Stripling

Arthur Vining Davis High Impact Fellows Projects

The students, Sarah Grace Keaveany and Elizabeth Ramsey, completed original research with to investigate 1) standing variation among common bacterial species (Escherichia coli and Stapholococcus epidermidis) in the amount of resistance to triclosan, a common anti-microbial used in hand washes; and 2) the capacity for these bacteria to develop increased resistance to triclosan through selection. The students have developed lab modules based on this research. One module includes a wet lab, where students will culture their own bacteria. The other module allows students to obtain data from photographs of bacterial plates in lieu of a wet lab component.

The goal of this project was to apply the censorship found in Fahrenheit 451 to other situations present in different areas of “the real world”. The students, after doing so, would then create a video of images and their voice, discussing themes of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451and how it’s used in other areas outside of the book. The purpose is to have students use analysis in literature and applying it in different areas as well as to do so in a different way other than through writing. By using the video software, they are changing the way that traditional …
