Building a sustainable system that goes beyond myopic interests and short-term policies is an arduous task for any school leader. In the U.S., our education system has been criticized for being too shallow in curriculum and unsustainable in the long run. In fact, a 2007 report by UNICEF concerning children’s well-being in 22 countries ranked the U.K. and the U.S. at the bottom of the industrialized nations in the survey. Hargreaves (2007) laments that these two countries, in their single-minded pursuit of economic competitiveness and development at all costs, are destroying the planet, while “eating their young.”

This study was viewed as being significant for teachers who are interested in teaching the LD/gifted. Children who are both gifted and learning disabled are likely to benefit from the knowledge and skill of educators who are committed to developing both the cr4eativity and academic areas of students who are gifted and learning disabled face obstacles in the typical classroom setting. Parents of these students also might benefit from this study. Parents and students should be more aware of the availability of services their schools provide in assisting them in becoming successful. In this paper, the authors will initially provide a vignette written in the first person aimed at illustrating the ethos of the university in which they work. The current status of educational reform issues related to general education and special education provides the opportunity for the creation of a system that encompasses the goals of both groups in a cohesive manner. Previously, these issues have been addressed separately; however, recent research identifies a progression of change in the focus of ideas in both general education and special education. The first two phases of school reform focused initially on raising standards and then on teacher empowerment and site-based management.
