This program brings three distinguished editors of leading journals to campus to discuss the scholarly publishing process: Robert Wilson of Phi Beta Kappa's The American Scholar, Stephen Depoe of Environmental Communication, and R. Brooks Hanson of Science. Each will give a public lecture and Q&A session in the Stodder Hall Graduate Commons on the scholarly publishing process in (respectively) humanities, social science, and science. Although intended primarily for graduate students and faculty, these events will be free, open to the public, and widely advertised. CETA will assist in organizing and advertising. The under-representation of women in engineering continues to be a cause of grave concern, particularly as international competitiveness focus attention on the need to increase native participation in the U.S. science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce. Engineering as a career is being promoted to girls through a new College of Engineering initiative called Girls Engineer Maine (GEM). GEM is an educational outreach program designed to increase the number of women studying engineering in Maine.

New Writing Series programming has always been guided the principles of innovation, collaboration, interdisciplinary, and diversity. From the start we have also worked hard to maximize the impact of real-time events within the rapidly-changing new media context. For example, the NWS blog has received more than 55,500 page views since its creation in fall2006 (up from 38,000 this time last year). Our Facebook group, created in the fall of 2007, has more than 140 members and reaches many more people with event and Series information. The Flickr page on which we document events has received roughly 44,700 views to date. …

ChemFest. 2011 is our local participation in National Chemistry Week intended to celebrate the contributions of the sciences, and, in particular, chemistry, to modern life and society. ChemFest will take place in Aubert Hall in the late afternoon and evening of Wednesday, October 12,2011.

The program consists of an open house for members of the campus community and beyond, including area school teachers and their students. We anticipate well over one hundred attendees. Undergraduate student members of the American Chemical Society UM Student Affiliates will present interactive demonstrations of chemistry at a level understandable to a lay audience.

We intend to involve as many relevant campus groups and departments as possible to make this a true campus wide collaboration. As in past years this event will be free so that people of Maine have access to the cultural vitality of the University of Maine.
