Social Issues: A Qualitative Case Study Revealing The Importance Of Activism In The Middle School Art Education Classroom, Vonessa L. Toczynski Dec 2011

Social Issues: A Qualitative Case Study Revealing The Importance Of Activism In The Middle School Art Education Classroom, Vonessa L. Toczynski

Art Education Projects

I began this qualitative case study on art activism in the Art Education classroom because I wanted to find the benefits of employing an activist curriculum in an art classroom. I also wanted to learn methods and strategies for this type of teaching. I choose two middle school art teachers and seventy of their sixth and seventh grade students in six of their art classes. Both teachers had been teaching for over five years and said they incorporated social issues and contemporary art, as well as encouraged activism in their art room. In this study, I was an observer participant …

A Qualitative Action Research Project Documenting Student Perceptions Of The Effects Of Visual Culture On Identity, Jessica M. Miccichi Dec 2011

A Qualitative Action Research Project Documenting Student Perceptions Of The Effects Of Visual Culture On Identity, Jessica M. Miccichi

Art Education Projects

I have conducted a qualitative action research project focusing on student perceptions of the impact of visual culture on teens including popular media. Students especially in high schools are bombarded with visual imagery through various technology sources. While working with high school juniors and seniors I noticed a rise in teen pregnancy and sexual confusion among this population. I wondered how much their exposure to sexually explicit imagery effected their identity and choices.

I started off planning research through a feminist and engaged pedagogical lens, specifically adhering to bell hook’s (1994) principals of “holistic teaching”, which focuses on emotional as …

A Participatory Action Study Investigating Implementing Democratic Teaching Practices In An Eighth Grade Art Classroom Using Critical Pedagogy, Kari M. Achatz

Art Education Projects

This qualitative action research study investigated the question "What might an eighth grade art classroom look like in practice? For eight weeks, 20 middle school students participated in a democratic art classroom. Using a theoretical lens of critical pedagogy I employed democratic teaching practices and asked students to create a work of art based on a social issue that they were passionate about. Through the course of this study students used their art as a way to voice their concerns about social issues and social injustices in the world. My research included data gathered from student interviews, student response papers, …

A Qualitative Participant Observation Study Investigating The Use Of Web 2.0 Technologies In One High School Visual Arts Classroom Using A Social Constructivist Lens, Nicholas R. Napierala

Art Education Projects

This qualitative project studied the benefits of Web 2.0 technology in one high school visual arts classroom using a participant observation stance. I examined an advanced art class through a social constructivist lens, with student’s ages from 16-18 years. I implemented several lessons teaching the students how artists display ideas within their artwork, through having the students use the blogging service Tumblr and the video sharing Web site YouTube. In analyzing the student’s interactions with their peers and their experiences with the technology, the project revealed that using the technology benefited their learning. I collected data from a variety of …

A Qualitative Multi-Site Case Study: Components, Strengths, & Benefits Of Studio Production In Traditional Public High Schools, Kristy M. Tartaglia Dec 2011

A Qualitative Multi-Site Case Study: Components, Strengths, & Benefits Of Studio Production In Traditional Public High Schools, Kristy M. Tartaglia

Art Education Projects

My own experiences in the visual arts lead me to a personal understanding of their importance and an interest in arts education advocacy. In order to advocate for the visual arts one must know what the arts teach and how to talk about those benefits. The lack of research on what is taught in the visual arts makes discussing the benefits difficult. Hetland, Winner, Veenema, & Sheridan (2007) began to close this gap with their findings of eight Studio Habits of Mind (develop craft, engage and persist, envision, express, observe, reflect, stretch and explore, understanding the art world) being taught …

Qualitative Research In Teaching Diversity In A Non-Diverse High School Setting Using Contemporary Art, Robin L. Reczek

Art Education Projects

Abstract

This qualitative action research study examined the effects of introducing diverse contemporary artworks into a non-diverse educational setting. For 3 months, 18 female high school students explored a range of artists, art styles, and artworks, in aid to discovering their own diverse qualities as well as the diversity of their classmates. Through participatory action research, I investigated how diverse contemporary artwork impacted student actions, discussions, and artworks. With the assistance of the transformative learning theory, I expected to convert students with non-accepting diversity views into unbiased young women. My research included data gathered from an assortment of alumni interviews, …

A Qualitative Case Study That Explores The Use Of Visual Thinking Journals In An Urban Arts Magnet High School, Shannon E. Machina

Art Education Projects

This qualitative case study research project investigated the question, What can be learned from a study that explores how an art teacher uses visual thinking journals and how students respond to the use of visual thinking journals in an urban arts high school setting?” The participants of this study were the art educator Mrs. Carlson and the students enrolled in her ninth grade Graphic Design and 12th grade Advanced Drawing and Painting courses. Over an eight week period data was collected and analyzed utilizing constructivist pedagogy to investigate the variety of ways high school art teachers and students …

Art Teacher Preparation Does The Path To Certification In Florida Matter?, Deanna Jean Price Dec 2011

Art Teacher Preparation Does The Path To Certification In Florida Matter?, Deanna Jean Price

HIM 1990-2015

For years now, students have been learning from two different types of teachers: Teachers who received certification from a traditional training program at a university and teachers who became certified through alternative certification routes. Does the educational preparation of an art teacher matter? Is alternative certification as effectual as traditional teacher preparation programs? Darling- Hammond (2006) says, "Evidence indicates that teachers who have had more preparation for teaching are more confident and successful with students than those who have had little or none." This thesis will examine and analyze alternative teacher certification in art education for the state of Florida, …

Supporting Artists In The Gallery: The Role Of The Museum Educator At An Art College, India N. Clark Aug 2011

Supporting Artists In The Gallery: The Role Of The Museum Educator At An Art College, India N. Clark

MALS Final Projects, 1995-2019

Campus museums are uniquely positioned to enhance student learning and support faculty in achieving course objectives. By tapping the potential of objects, exhibition themes, and the gallery environment, museum professionals can empower faculty and students to make meaningful and relevant connections to curriculum content. Inspired by the successes in such endeavors of revered teaching museums at elite liberal arts colleges, but frustrated by the challenges of transferring model practices to the context of an art college, I set out to investigate what was possible at my own place of employment, the nation's only publicly funded art college, Massachusetts College of …

An Action Research Study On Using Cooperative Learning During Graphic Design Classroom Crits, Anise V. Simpson

Master of Education Research Theses

The author of this action research study surveyed both graphic design students and graphic design instructors about their critique experiences to discover instructors and students both identified a lack of student participation as well as the issue of students getting hurt feelings and becoming discouraged as common critique concerns. The author designed and implemented a treatment called Design Structures to increase student participation during crits. To improve the quality of experience of design students during crits, the author incorporated cooperative learning strategies developed by Spencer and Miguel Kagan (2009) into the Design Structures treatment. The author used the experience sampling …

To The Ages Of Ages: Reconceptualizing High School Art History Curriculum, Amy Bergh May 2011

To The Ages Of Ages: Reconceptualizing High School Art History Curriculum, Amy Bergh

Theses and Dissertations

Through this curriculum study, I explored the application of ideas found within contemporary art education to a course of traditional secondary art history. These contemporary art education ideas included: visual culture instruction, interdisciplinary instruction, contemporary art instruction, curriculum development, the use of enduring ideas, and the inclusion of a variety of perspectives based on gender and ethnicity. Through these art education ideas, a new curriculum was formed, that pushed both the students and the teacher toward a more inclusive art history course that made real connections for students and allowed students to be active members in their own learning. Instruction …

A Comparative Review Of The Works Of Feldman, Sternberg, Gardner And Eisner And The Resulting Practical Application For The Secondary Art Classroom, Heather Denmark May 2011

A Comparative Review Of The Works Of Feldman, Sternberg, Gardner And Eisner And The Resulting Practical Application For The Secondary Art Classroom, Heather Denmark

HIM 1990-2015

Some fields come and go, but there will always be a need for older generations to teach the younger generations. For this reason, teachers will always be needed. The material that they choose to teach can sometimes determine the outcome of a nation. Take a look into German and Roman histories; they are littered with teachers convincing students that their way is right. I think that it is imperative that we research the full potential of what we are teaching our students. For that reason, my thesis will consist of analyzing and synthesizing the research of Feldman, Sternberg, Gardner and …

Including Everyone A Handbook For Lgbt Inclusion In The Elementary Classroom, Shanine Mollentze May 2011

Including Everyone A Handbook For Lgbt Inclusion In The Elementary Classroom, Shanine Mollentze

HIM 1990-2015

A quick look into the prevalence of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) topics in children's literature and one can easily note the rarity of LGBT presence in elementary classrooms. This topic continually fails to enter the classroom curriculum due to the taboo status it has in society. Some people find it to be inappropriate for the classroom, especially the elementary classroom. However, understanding that the intention is to provide an inclusive environment for LGBT students and/or families is important--not to expose children to explicit sexual discussion, but to establish a community of tolerance and acceptance. The purpose of this …

The World In Pictures: Aesthetics And Visual Culture In The Art Classroom, Melissa Burger Jan 2011

The World In Pictures: Aesthetics And Visual Culture In The Art Classroom, Melissa Burger

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The intent of this thesis is to present an argument for the inclusion of aesthetics and the aesthetics of visual culture within the art education curriculum. Technological advancement has created an age of unprecedented dependence on visual imagery; the pervasive (and sometimes misleading) visual culture of contemporary society affects the way in which individuals understand and relate to their world. The study of the aesthetics of visual culture can impact values within society and culture through the formation of self-identity, maintaining culture, and instituting cultural changes. An engaging visual arts program that builds upon students' lived experiences may be the …

A Qualitative Investigation Of The Use Of An Art-Based Technique In Counselor Group Supervision, Cheryl Shiflett Jan 2011

A Qualitative Investigation Of The Use Of An Art-Based Technique In Counselor Group Supervision, Cheryl Shiflett

Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations

While the counseling community embraces the use of creative approaches in counseling and supervision, few researchers have attempted to empirically describe the process of including an art-based technique into counselor group supervision. A grounded theory design guided the exploration of the factors and processes of including one art-based technique into six counselor supervision groups. Six doctoral-level supervisors who were trained in an art-based technique known as the visual case processing method introduced the method to their group supervisees who were completing a semester-long practicum or internship. Data collection methods included individual and focus group interviews, observations of visual case presentations, …
